The best party of all time? It was a tricky one, until Pride started 50 years ago in New York. Now, there’s no debate. And, because June’s officially Pride month, we thought there was no better time to bagsy your spot at one of the top LGBT festivals. We’ve picked out the very best options for this year, and next, so all that’s left to do is to pick your favourite…
14th -17th June
The White Isle gets a splash of colour every June, and the biggest names in the club world (think Pacha and Amnesia) open their doors to thousands of happy revellers all in the name of love. Plug into a playlist of deep house and chilled-out beats, and expect to bump into big-name DJs like Carl Cox. And, once the parades are over and the last float has departed, save some time for Portinatx – a town that couldn’t be further from the party. Pine-cloaked hills and sleepy beaches are the perfect spot to recover and load-up on detox smoothies.
Grab your whitest t-shirt and prepare to be pelted in powder at Multicolour Fest LGBTTI. You’ll be entertained by a mezze of international DJs, as well as a load of top-notch entertainment including acrobats and trapeze artists. There’s an option to camp out there for the night too, if you want to go al-fresco. Want to add a rainbow of shots to the line-up? Super-clubs are second nature to Cancun, and there’s a 22-kilometre beach to sip cocktails on during the day.
4th-10th of September
Head to Valletta, also known as the Fortress City, and clear your diary for a week of Pride mayhem in Malta. Show off your skills at football tournaments, attempt to be pitch-perfect at karaoke and plan your outfit for Pride Day on the 9th. The gorgeous Medieval city will be decorated by floats, and you’ll also find a free open air street party and concert featuring top local and international artists. Don’t forget to head to Tiguilo Club at St Julians, either – where the official Pride Party will be in full swing.
When the winter nights start kicking in and lazy summer days feel far, far away, bring them back with a trip to Maspalomas Winter Pride. Pack your best cozzie for its crazy pool parties, be mesmerised by a sky of fireworks and grab a front row seat at the amazing shows on offer. You’ll be in good company, too – it’s expected that 15,000 other revellers will join the party in Gran Canaria.
Can you think of an anywhere that’s more in the party spirit then Jamaica? We doubt it. This year, turn up the reggae beats and celebrate Pride at Montego Bay (known by the locals as Mo Bay). Jerk chicken in one hand, rainbow flag in the other, you’re in for a treat. If you fancy throwing in a dash of culture, too, have your say at a discussion on the relationship between Jamaican music and the LGBTQI community.
