  • Thinking about a holiday to Thailand? We think Khao Lak is one of the best places to jet off to for a couple’s holiday. This sun-kissed beachside resort in the south of the country is all about watching those world-famous orange tinted sunsets over the Gulf of Thailand, indulging in treatments for two at luxury spas, and exploring breathtaking national parks together – no wonder all the couples are flocking here for their next long-haul trip…

Stay at a dreamy beach-front hotel

Did you know the Apsara Beachfront Resort and Villa comes with an infinity pool, two different restaurants and a relaxing spa? We think that sounds like the perfect ingredients for a romantic getaway. This place is nestled on the sands of Pakarang Beach, so those all-important moonlit strolls along the sugar-white sands won’t be hard to come by. Plus, the hotel’s Apsara Spa is set in tropical gardens, so the two of you can indulge in a traditional Thai massage while soaking up views of the flower-lined lagoon. Proposals optional.

    Explore Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park takes the top spot on most holidaymaker’s sightseeing list in Khao Lak. It’s no wonder, either. The huge reserve is known as nature’s playground, thanks to its wealth of critters, elephants and monkeys that all call it home. And in the way of exploring, there’s so much to see. Take Cheow Lan Lake, for example, which covers 182-square-kilometres of the national park. The bright green waters are home to towering limestone cliffs, backed by huge jungles and spooky-looking caves. The two of you can spend the day exploring this hidden gem by traditional Thai longtail boat. Your first stop will be the pastel-coloured floating bungalows, where you’ll get to tuck into a traditional Thai lunch of stir-fried noodles, zesty soups and freshly-netted and grilled fish. Afterwards, you’ll hop back onto your boat and make tracks for the jungle. Once you’ve reached dry land, you’ll trek through the forest-covered jungle on foot for about a mile.

    Snorkel around the Similan Islands

A romantic holiday to Khao Lak is incomplete without a day trip to the Similan Islands. This national park is the epitome of luxury – the Kardashians visited back in 2014, FYI. It takes just over an hours’ speedboat ride to get there from Khao Lak, so it’s the ideal choice for when you want to swap sunbathing for something more exciting. When you arrive, you’ll get to swim in some of the bluest water in the world – and snaps of the postcard-worthy beach will give your Instagram followers serious holiday FOMO. Once you’ve dried off, the two of you can tick off sights like Donald Duck Bay. If you climb to the top of the oddly-shaped rocks, you’ll have jaw-dropping vistas of the islands, taking in lush green forests and the other surrounding islets. Then, you can tuck into a tasty Thai lunch on the beach before hopping back onto your speedboat for a snorkelling session. Below the surface, the coral reefs are bursting with life. You’ll get to spot Nemo-like fish and even sea turtles if you’re lucky. And you can top it all off by slurping a traditional coconut ice-cream before heading back to dry land. Perfect.

    Make traditional Thai food together

If you’re looking to try out something new in Khao Lak, look no further than a Thai cooking class. Cooking is the ideal way to learn new skills together, plus you’ll get to gobble some tasty Thai dishes. You’ll start your cooking class by dropping in at the local market, so be sure to take some notes on the main ingredients used in Thai cooking. Next, you’ll head back to the kitchen where you’ll get to put your knowledge to the test by following your guide’s recipes. Menu-wise, you’ll get to cook and serve up a chicken cashew nut curry, khung sarong (a fried prawn and noodle dish) and a penang curry. We promise you’ll want seconds (and maybe even thirds) – all of the above are really delicious.
