  • Wishing winter was over? Escape to the tropical Dominican Republic for some sunshine. We know just the place to stay…

When it comes to holidays in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic hits the spot. Caramel-coloured sands, rich jungles and historical towns are a winning combination in this part of the world. And, of course, there are some top-notch hotels. Our pick of the bunch is IBEROSTAR Costa Dorada. Sandwiched between an Insta-worthy beach and the dramatic mountains of Isabel de Torres, this five-star retreat has one of the best postcodes on the island. So, if you want to banish your winter blues, this is just what the doctor ordered. Here’s why…

    All-day action

Water babies will feel right at home here. From sailing to windsurfing to kayaking, there are loads of watersports to try. The hotel also offers PADI-certified scuba diving – so if you’ve always wanted to have a go, this is your chance to get involved. Fancy a family tournament? Head to the gigantic pool for a game of water polo, or play with the kids in their very own splash pool.  The jam-packed schedule continues on dry land, too. You can try your hand at archery, sign up for Spanish lessons, or join in with a merengue dance class. There are some team sports on offer, as well, like basketball and tennis.

    Downtime

If that all sounds far too exhausting, check out the pool’s swim-up bar. Here, you can work your way through the drinks menu and top up your tan at the same time. But, if you really want to spoil yourself – you’re on holiday, after all – head to the spa. With four whirlpools, a Turkish bath and a long list of treatments, this place is perfect for a pampering sesh. You can de-stress in the steam room, or pay a little extra for a relaxing massage.

    Wining and dining

At the end of a busy day, fill up on Dominican dishes at the all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant, El Mercado. For something a little special, though, you can reserve a table at one of the à la carte restaurants. Sakura serves up tasty Japanese food, while El Bohio deals in Brazilian cuisine. And, for a Mexican menu, try La Hacienda. In the summer, there are also BBQs on the beach, where you can tuck into juicy steak, smoky ribs and huge pans of paella. The best bit? This is all part of your All Inclusive holiday, so you don’t have to pay a penny extra. Bon appetit.

    Party time

The sun goes down, and the cocktails come out. Make sure you pack your dancing shoes so you can throw some shapes at the beach parties and discos. Kids aren’t left out, either. They can bop ‘til they drop at the mini-disco, or the whole family can watch a glitzy Broadway-style show.
