Hotel Awards
We've been busy helping our most popular hotels to be more sustainable, looking at everything from their recycling schemes to their use of local produce and tradespeople. Our Summer 2008 and future brochures highlight hotels that have made the best efforts in these areas, so that you can choose your holiday safe in the knowledge that the hotel is doing their bit to reduce their impact on the environment and support their local community.
Look out for these logos on accommodation pages:
Sustainable Hotel: Gold Award: These hotels are leading the way, with advanced environmental practices; they encourage others, look for ways to improve and communicate their work.
Sustainable Hotel: Silver Award: These hotels look for ways to actively help the local community and environment.
Sustainable Hotel: Bronze Award: These hotels are reducing their impact on the environment and treat people in a fair and respectful way.
Sustainable excursions
We are working on an audit of social and environmental issues for our excursion programme too, to help you to make an informed choice. We will keep you updated on our progress.
Want to help?
You can be aware and respectful of the cultures and traditions of the place you are visiting, as well as conscious of how you can protect any endangered species in the region where you are holidaying. We help you by providing some advice in your ticket book. In general, you can help by following the advice below:
- Please discard packaging waste before travelling
- Buy locally made souvenirs and use local services wherever possible
- Help preserve local wildlife and habitats - don't damage flowers, plants or coral, nor buy products made from endangered plants or animals
- Use water sparingly - showers instead of baths, and inform hotel staff if you are happy to re-use towels and linen rather than have them changed daily
- Save energy - always turn off air conditioning, lights and TVs when not in use
- Learn about appropriate forms of behaviour, dress codes and how much to tip
- Kindly ask before taking photos of local people or their houses, and do not have pictures taken of yourself with animals from the wild
