Echoes throughout the building
Hated the way everywhere in the places echoes especially in the restaurant and bar areas, in fact you could not sit and have a quiet drink anywhere The food was excellent and the apartment was spacious. The pool is enormous and amazing to swim in as you can easily get away from other people due to to size and swim proper lengths! It not's really what you consider to be 4 star. We certainly would not choose to return here not really geared towards couples.More
Our first time in Portugal
This was our first holiday in Portugal. The small fishing village of Alvor is lovely some nice eating places and some not bad grift shops. The hotel on first approach is set in nice grounds and looks really well kept. The reception greeting was efficient and warm. But having arrived at 1pm after a 4am start to find you can't get in your room until at 4pm, is a bit rich. In addition to that they don't really offer any were to change into something more appropriate. The first room offered was next door to a noisy plant room, after a slight discussion we were moved to other room. All rooms were of similar arrangement, large kitchen, dinner, sitting room. Bedroom and bathroom with large balcony. I had asked for a pool view, however, the travel company hadn't passed this request on and we were informed that this would be at additional cost? Overall though our room was clean and comfortable. TV channel choice was extremely limited. Pool was large clean, but in the morning and on windy days could be very cold, in all in could of done with some thermal lifting. The sunbed issue mentioned in most posts is a common theme, but people don't help, i don't understand why parents feel very young children 1- say 9 need their own sunbed. I sat behind a family for most of the day with 3 unused sunbeds as the children when out the pool sat on tbe ends of their parents sunbed. While others skulked about looking for empty sunbeds. Yes the hotel could do with more, but selfish bathers also don't help. Food was good lots of fresh fruit and salad. Good meats and plenty of fish variety. Like all self catering it can get repetitive and there are days when making a meal for a fussy eater like me difficult. But food was good over all. Yes it is busy in the restaurant, there are two, a supposed family and a quiet but again it doesn't make a lot of difference due to people ignoring the rule. The bars arent bad, theŕe is a wood bar in the pool area and a bar between the restaurants both serve free drinks of all sorts. There is an indoor bar which serves cocktails and labelled brands and in a way is convenient, but this is a paid bar. All in all we had a good holiday, there where elements of this hotel which we felt was trying to rake in further money. Pool towels require a 20euro deposit refundable on towel return. The room safe is charged at 2euro a day, the well place chargeable bar, the fact ice cream was only served 4pm - 5pm in the snack room, otherwise cost. Normally on all inclusive you don't need money with you at the hotel. However, I'm sure with a few young kids it could cost a little fortune. There is also the entertainment which i have to admit we avoided. The daytime activities for a strange reason were carried out in the full glare of the sun, which made doing yoga or exercises interesting. Unsure why not doing it undercover wouldn't of been better and safer? Our holiday reps were excellent and extremely helpful. Would we go back, yes, even though transfer is quite long and the issues above.More
I don't understand the harsh reviews
I stayed here with my husband and one year old daughter in July-August 2017. I had read a lot of reviews beforehand, so I had a pretty fair idea of what to expect. Let me just say, the harsh reviews are far too harsh!!! This is my run through: Rooms are brilliant; modern, spacious and clean. If you want bedding and towels changing then ask them, they'll happily do it. Food is surprisingly tasty and varied (anyone for prawns, steak, mussels, popcorn, sweets, chocolate fountain!!!! Oh and the Portuguese pastry is to die for) Unfortunately both restaurants are canteen like (but fine for us with our young daughter) Drinks are local but I always found stuff I liked (I drank red wine, white wine, martini & lemonade, red sangria, diet coke (branded), "fanta" (unbranded-but very nice) & "Baileys" Pool is huge and cold but a welcomed temperature in the hot weather. Pool area is the same as anywhere; people reserve sun loungers. Most hotels have a policy threatening to stop this, but very few implement it. It's us holiday makers who create this problem, not the hotels.... Entertainment team are FAB and really hard working. Daytime stuff is better than evening. Kids club is amazing! If your child is 3 or under then you have to stay with them, but it was worth it just to see how happy she was in there. There's a really good outdoor play area too. By the way, do yourself a favour and get out of the hotel. Visit Alvor, visit other local towns, visit the water park. You must visit the beach, it's one of the best I've seen in Europe. And follow the beach all the way to the far left, you'll come across the coves. They're stunning, an absolute must if you stay here.More
2nd visit really disappointed
Room Feel quite let down ! We came on holiday to the alvor baia last year and really loved the hotel so we decided to return this year. We were really disappointed. The cleanliness of the hotel is nothing like it was last year our room was cleaned to a high standard unfortunately this year all the cleaners seem to do is make your bed the sheets had NOT been changed at all in our 10 day stay. The towels are changed daily but on one day they left them on the toilet seat !! The balcony was filthy it didn't even seem clean when we arrived fingerprints on windows etc and a layer of dust on the furniture. Standards have really dropped the rooms are starting to look tired. Restaurant. Food is very repetitive we got fed up of eating in the restaurant so dinned out most evenings. The food was fine last year but it seems they have cut back using cheaper cuts of meats etc. Pool The pool is freezing but there is plenty of room for the amount of guest. Never had an issue getting sun beds someone did move our towels and put them on one bed when we went for dinner one day so after that we couldn't even have lunch as a family as one of us had to guard the beds which is ridiculous. Entertainment. The pool entertainment is fine. Evening entertainment is terrible. Disappointed this year feel like the hotel has cut back on a lot of things we won't be returning again. More
Waste of a holiday
This was our first family holiday to Portugal and alvor is a stunning place to visit. Now the hotel😳 Be prepared if you arrive early to wait around until 3-4 in the afternoon for your rooms. The rooms:- Didn't clean the rooms properly, they just threw the towels on the bed and tuck in the bed sheets. The bathroom wasn't cleaned properly in the whole two weeks. We even tested them to see if they would pick up a biscuit off the balcony and it was still there after a week. The sofa is very worn and the kitchenette has no kettle. Pool:- Pool was very nice and large but make sure you watch your kids don't go to deep because the lifeguards are too busy taking your towels off your sun beds rather than watching the pool. If your an hour off your sun bed they would give it to someone else because they only had 300 sun beds for 1500 guests. The manager told a guest to come back next week because they have more sun beds getting delivered. Poor guest didn't have £4000 spare to come back. The bar:- I'm sure the place is designed to rip you off because they have two working at the outside bar and be prepared to wait 10mins . Number of times I just walked off . If you want the nice drink you have to pay for it in the inside bar. If you want ice cream before 4pm you have to pay for it. (I thought this was an all inclusive holiday)🤔. Food:- We only liked the BBQ nights which were on tues and sat night. We ate out the rest of the time which was really nice food, the restaurants in alvor were very good, but the down side was we spent a lot of money because we didn't like the hotel food. Again the hotel gain again. Staff:- Miserable . I'm sure the manager tells them not to show any teeth. The staff would shout at you if you took one step out of the restaurant with any food. Entertainment:- If you get a table your in for a whole hour of entertainment. 20mins of that is for kids. Hotel:- Poorly designed but looks nice. Good points:- The hotel reps are brilliant with the kids. You can see that they work hard and are always polite. Alvor is really nice. Def a place to visit but choose another hotel. Beach is stunning which is 4 miles long.More
