A good pool scene and a handy setting close to the beach – just a couple of reasons this big, bright hotel wins the vote.
This place is just a 10-minute walk from Salou’s beach, one of the best sandy stretches on the Costa Dorada. It’s in a lively little sea port, with a raft of shops, bars and restaurants on the doorstep.
The Calypso comes with lots of activities. There are 2 main pools for starters. The 10-pin bowling alley wins plaudits on TripAdvisor, too.

Fantastic family holiday
Stayed here for 2 weeks August 2016 with my 3 children, 14,11,11. We picked this hotel as it came with entry into the waterpark and we knew the local area due to an earlier holiday a few years before. The accommodation was fantastic. Two single beds plus a set of bunk beds, plenty of storage and hairdryer in the bathroom. We stayed on a half board basis and the food was fantastic. We all managed to find something we loved, only down side was the queue to get your hot food. It was at times very long but took no longer than 5 or so minutes. Staff we quick to clear plates and were helpful in locating tables for our party, plenty of choice at breakfast too, unlimited tea, coffee and juices a total bonus. Two swimming pools, one that allowed kids to use inflatables and one that was more for chilling, it was very busy at times, to secure a subbed be out by 0930. Evening entertainment was out of this world! Absolutely FANTASTIC, we even cut short our time in the theme parks to ensure we were back in time for this. Bus to Portaventura was at times very busy but overall the experience was great, would go back in a heartbeat, in fact already planning our next trip and would definitely stay at the Medplaya Calypso. Worst holiday ever
Would not stay at this hotel ever again I was there in August with my young daughter the people in the room next door were doing drugs my room was absolutely stinking of cannabis the hotel staff were not interested when I complained would not change my room never got an apology I had to go outside the hotel to find a launderette to have my clothes and towels laundered which cost 25 euros food was repetitive and the queuing for sunbeds when they were unchained was an absolute joke staff were unfriendly as a whole I found it tacky for being a 3 star family hotelMore

Just returned. Good hotel. Only slight criticism is the food requires more variety:- very bland in tasting. The carvery was the best night with the prawns. Require more variety in cheeses for the salad. Entertainment the best I have seen in a hotel, Michael Jackson Show brilliant, best I have ever seen!!! staff well presented and friendly, courteous, a clap goes out to Raymond (if management have a staff award please give this to him). Considering it is a large hotel very quiet and chilled atmosphere. Rooms cleaned everyday, domestic staff always pleasant in the corridors. Would definitely recommend the hotel to stay, very clean hotel. No faults at all. Beaches in Salou very good, clean. Only issue was not a lot of variety of entertainment in Salou, which was a let down. If I had a choice I prefer Benidorm as Salou is very similar. If you have never been to Salou it is worth a visit. The tour to Nou Camp Barcelona good, would recommend to go on own and not with tour trip as it was a bit rushed. Barcelona city worth a visit so much to see, very cosmopolitan city and memorable. Very humid in Salou so ensure take a fan out with you as not all facilities have the air con. The night market worth a visit as it has more different presents to take back for friends at home. Did have difficulty in getting hotels Wifi, no charge though. Go to Cambril, we had prawns and seafood tapas only 22 euros and worth every penny. The prawns were massive and at only 4 euros excellent, go on a boat trip 12 euro each return and worth it for the seafood experience and harbour. Watch out for the Mosquitos in Tarragona, this is the only time when I suffered, several times. Salou very humid ensure you take plenty of cotton tops with you!!!!!More
Very average hotel grounds round pool uneven so go steady on your toes. Food nice had lots of choice evey morning and night . One night my lottle girl was eating a chicken nugget to find it was still pink so checked them everynight but ok all rest of times.all though some times very hetic . Snack bar food was ok but not the best we have had in the past so stuck to home made toasties. Entertainment very good for the kids the circus show fantastic. All inclusive drinks stop at 11pm and they will only sure you in half plastic pots from 10pm not quite sure why. Day activities could do with more energy . Staff all realy friendly On arrival had to pay 2euros per suit case in hold room as rooms wasnt ready till 1 there was 6 of us and had to go back to cases a couple times each time having to pay 2 euros which wasnt happy about. Only 10 min walk to beech and saluo town dont pay for taxi cost 12 euros and it is just around the corner and reception told us a 40 min walk Overall good hotel could be brill if small issues was adressed More
Cheap and cheerful....
I booked with Thomson and this was not what I asked for. Very basic rooms, no tea making facilities, three single beds ? Instead of one double and single, air conditioning failed one night. Staff friendly and helpful other than the Thomson rep who was uninterested in any complaints.Food although plentiful was a little repetitive and the usual chips with everything. Freezing swimming pool unusable.Unaware the hotel accepted large school parties ,on arrival one well behaved group. Two days later you got 45Irish school children swearing ,screaming as teachers watched on ,later the yobs pushed in front of people queuing for dinner ,although hotel staff tried to stop them again teacher "loose term" stood by and did nothing. Witness several days of ambulances arriving, The serving of seriously intoxicated guests sadly British was a shock, this particular guest actually wet her self ,spilled her drink before staggering off and face planting the floor.Other occasion a lady in the alfresco area vomited over the table and on to the floor before her husband put her head in a dustbin ,clearly suffering from the night before. Concerned about security of rooms as the rooms key seems to open other doors as our cleaner used our key on another door???? The reception guy confirmed my suspicions he just threw it in a box with other ??. Personally we would definitely not stay here again let down by the calibre of some guests and issues mentioned above .Took the time to view a few other hotels in the area and found far better ones for just a little more money closer to the beach although the calypso is only 15 minutes walk from beachMore
