A good pool scene and a handy setting close to the beach – just a couple of reasons this big, bright hotel wins the vote.
This place is just a 10-minute walk from Salou’s beach, one of the best sandy stretches on the Costa Dorada. It’s in a lively little sea port, with a raft of shops, bars and restaurants on the doorstep.
The Calypso comes with lots of activities. There are 2 main pools for starters. The 10-pin bowling alley wins plaudits on TripAdvisor, too.

When we arrived i thought the hotel looked lovely from the inside and out. When we got into our room it was clean enough, although it was very run down. Cleaners done a good job to make sure the hotel was clean. The hotel didn't really pay much attention to the British guests and infact was playing bingo in Spanish. The hotel rep couldn't even speak a word of English, we asked a question and got handed a leaflet to read from. The food was disgusting, although got our money's worth with the drinks. The games room is good, great for kids. Also the bowling is great! During the day there also wasn't much entertainment, was really boring to be honest. One day the pool was absolutely disgusting and was full of insects and leafs, no one even tried to get them out. More
A major positive for this hotel is cleanliness, both in your room and lobby/pool area etc as well as location. Another positive is the MedPlaya entertainers who played games for all ages during the day around the pool and despite only watching the evening entertainers twice, they were good also! However, as others have said on here, the walls literally are paper thin!! When someone next door moves it sounds as though they're walking around your room! I also found some staff to be rude on the odd occasion (although worth mentioning most staff were quite pleasant) an example being I asked for a San Miguel for myself and a Mojito for my girlfriend at the pool bar as I had done many times the holiday, but an older man serving obviously had no idea how to make a Mojito and I joke you not shook his head and said 'no, no Mojito here' then proceeded to just walk off leaving me just stood there! Didn't apologise that he couldn't make one and find someone who did just literally shrugged his shoulders and did one, obviously end of his shift! Regarding food, although there was a large choice it was very bland and not brilliant. Saying that I didn't eat there every night but the two times I did seemed two nights too many. Good for families with young children who perhaps wanted an early night but you can find much better food at reasonable prices in Salou, many just a small walk away. Personally never understood (unless you have young children) why you would pay to go all inclusive to eat that stuff in the hotel and line the pockets of the owner of a multi-national hotel company, rather than venture out in to the local area and go to some restaurants there, often owned by average hard working people trying to make a living, who supply better quality food at a reasonable price but there you go. Yes I do know the hotel employs local people but you catch my drift. Overall, cleanliness was good, which is a major factor as was the location as it was a short distance to the main 'strip' of Salou but far enough away that you weren't up all night due to noise. On the other hand, some staff are quite rude and the food wasn't great but I would still recommend to young families due to the good atmosphere about the place as it was very child friendly. However, for people like me (young couples) or even older family and couples I would suggest going elsewhere.More
Just returned after a short 4 night break with my partner. The rooms were cool and very clean. Pool area could be more clean but was fine, sunbed are few and far between so getting up early to secure one is essential. Food in the hotel was great, breakfast exceptionally good there was a snack bar in between meals which had a good selection. The hotel is situated a a great location 2 min walk from shops bars and restaurants and about 10 mins down to the beach. We travelled as a couple but the hotel was very much family orientated. Nighttime entertainment was fab for a three star hotel. Would recommend to others and would come back if was on the area. Overall great holiday. More
Travelled as a family of 5, 3 adults and 2 children and we all had a great time. Food plentiful and was available alday from 8am to 11pm which was great, my partner is really fussy and never eats much on holidays because he doesnt like trying new things but he did make most of snack bar. The rest of familly really enjoyed the food and we never had a problem getting a seat in restaurant and never had to queue more than a few minutes at the food counter. You never had to queue more than a few minutes at the bar aswell even at really busy times because they had 5 or 6 members of staff serving. Pools were lovely and was plenty of sunbeds, they didnt get unchained until 9.30 to stop people reserving them. Best part of the hotel had to be the entertainment the evening shows were fantastic and the full family enjoyed them. Entertainment does start a little late would be nice to have a quiz or something before hand to kill a bit of time. Location is excellent right around the corner was a fairground, mini golf and lots of shops and bars and beach was a 10-15 min walk. Rooms are quite small and basic but that doesn't bother us as we don't spend alot of time in them but they were cleaned every day with clean towels left. I would definetly return to this hotel. If your looking for a great family hotel with excellent entertainment then this hotel is perfect!More
We stayed here last week in May with 3 children 12 , 7 and 1 yr old there was entertainment for all ages , there was pools to cater for all ages just the main pool wasn't allowed balls or floaters in that pool but wasn't a problem as other pool was just as big . Food was lovely always plenty of choice only problem was the cue to get in dinning room most nites took about 20-30 mins to get in then the cue to get served very frustrating with a 1 yr old . Not loads of room in bedrooms as was 3 beds and a cot in there but was room to walk . All staff was really nice always made a fuss of kids and always there with high chair . Town is 5 minute walk away and its full of shops and bars and funfair great place to stay would defiantly go bk to salou very child friendly .More
