Hotel Calypso

A good pool scene and a handy setting close to the beach – just a couple of reasons this big, bright hotel wins the vote.

This place is just a 10-minute walk from Salou’s beach, one of the best sandy stretches on the Costa Dorada. It’s in a lively little sea port, with a raft of shops, bars and restaurants on the doorstep.

The Calypso comes with lots of activities. There are 2 main pools for starters. The 10-pin bowling alley wins plaudits on TripAdvisor, too.

Loved our holiday

We stayed at the hotel calypso in October 14... The holiday itself was fantastic! All the staff were friendly and good with our two children! Especially the cooks and hostess in the food area! Rooms were cleaned daily, and we're of a good standard! We felt very safe in the hotel and salou in general. The only negative we found, we arrived at the hotel at about 10am, after a long trip already we just wanted to get into our rooms but it's want ready till 1pm..... As are suitcases were packed we couldn't get changed or get stuff out for swimming etc without getting our good out All over the reception area! But this didn't affect the overall holiday More

Second visit don't think there will be a third!!

So after an amazing family holiday last year, we figured better the devil you know! So we arrived at reception on 17.10.2014 for our weeks holiday, and after a short wait were told our rooms were not ready, and would not be ready until lunchtime, so we went down and had a coke whilst we waited. 1 clock came rooms were ready, in calypso 2! wasn't too impressed as the amount of people I heard complaining about it last year was unreal. Rooms were ok clean and adequate, cleaned daily, with a soap and shampoo dispenser, and the shower was amazing always hot and nice and powerful, no hair dryers, no fridge, and our aircon sounded like there was something living in it, so noisy it was unreal, so we switched it off and left the door open. ( soon to prove noisier then the aircon) Daytimes were great the pools are great (cold but great) food was plentiful and always something to eat. play park was great for little one. I did not see any entertainment myself but my husband, my mum and my little lady seemed to enjoy it. The staff are amazing and so friendly, especially the restaurant staff, the main hostess as you go in is so welcoming and helpful and always greeted us with massive smiles, directed us to a table and retrieved a high chair for the baby. Excellent. Close to beach and strip. And the little train stops just outside, which is great to get to theme park, beach or just for a whole trip round to see what's where. the first 2 nights in war zone 2 were ok, then the trouble started, should have known something was going on when security guards turned up, masses of kids on school trips running riot, throwing chairs over balconys, shining laser pens in people's rooms, generally screaming and shouting. piss heads fighting along our balcony, someone else threatening to burn the block down and letting off fire extinguishers, all made for many sleepless nights, and a very very scared 11 year old!! Even made a couple of calls to reception complaining, which I've never had to do on any trip anywhere before!, what I will say is the security were great, the 2 times I phoned reception they were there and sorting out within 10 mins. Overall the hotel still remains a great place to stay let down this time by the people staying there, what I did notice though was it seemed all the Spanish were in calypso 1, and everyone else slung in war zone 2! Great room

E mailed hotel before we went to ask if they had any rooms with a walk in shower as it was impossible for us to climb into a bath, on arrival to the hotel was disappointed with the room in calypso 2 as it was very old fashioned but only had a shower over the bath, I went straight to reception who said they never received my email and I should have e mailed Thompson direct they explained that they only had three disabled rooms and would be able to move us two days later, they moved us as promised and what a difference a room makes it was so much easier for us to move around but more than anything it had a walk in shower. I would like to thank the reception staff for helping us with our request. After our move we felt as though we could finally start to enjoy the holiday. Food was not as good as the last time we stayed here but the Al fresco buffet made up for it. Really impressed that you were served a pint of beef (although still plastic) and not a small plastic cup like other hotels, very friendly staff in reception and dining room and especially the lady in the gift shop where we got our paper from each day. Some bar staff were a little standoffish but most of them were ok, this is our second visit and will be returning again. The calypso 1 is really clean and refreshing and a pleasure to stay in. More

Reasonable hotel, good food, plenty of drink AI 9am-11pm , night entertainment average to poor. Location was not too bad few streets back from the beach. Room was ok, , flat screen tv , with a couple of uk channels. Free wifi was crap , took on average 3-5 mins to load a page although you could upgrade for £20 for fast broadband all over the hotel.More

Great 5 night stay

Overall the hotel was great with an excellent all-inclusive service and good food. The rooms were of impeccable hygiene. The bed sheets and towels were changed daily which enforced the hygiene aspect of the rooms. Our balcony had a pleasant view that overlooked one of the two swimming pools contained within the hotel. There was little noise at night as well which provided almost perfect sleeping conditions. Although they didn't offer much variety, the breakfasts and dinners were usually good. One small problem I found while at dinner was that very young children were allowed to help themselves to the trays of food in the buffet which often resulted in some foods being mixed with others. This also caused quite a mess at breakfast time. The lunch was entirely self catered with a 'snack bar' that offered a wide variety of foods for all preferences. I thouroughly enjoyed the snack bar, mainly for its array of different foods. The area surrounding the hotel is very good. Many shops, restaurants and bars are only a ten minute walk away from hotel calypso. This made the leisure aspect of our stay very accessible. Also, portaventura, a theme park, is located only a few miles away from the hotel that can be accessed either by taxi, or the cheaper option of a bus which you can ride to portaventura for three euros. The entertainment in the hotel was excellent. There was a different show every night of our stay that collectively were very enjoyable. The shows ranged from a Michael Jackson tribute act to a film quiz. The entertainment was always full as they always delivered and I would say that it was one of the best aspects of the hotel! I really enjoyed my stay at hotel calypso and any bad reviews should be ignored. Definitely a recommendation for all.More
