The Khao Lak Merlin Resort has one of the best postcodes in the area – it’s tucked away in acres of tropical rainforest, and gives you easy access to the town centre.
This place is set in 16 acres of tropical gardens, so it’s got a real away-from-it-all feel. Location-wise, it’s next to a white-sand beach and just a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Khao Lak.
Spread around the gardens are 4 curvy pools and a couple of restaurants. Rooms are tucked among the greenery, too – they’re done out in Thai style, with handcrafted teak and bamboo pieces.

Fantastic Christmas and New year Break
We flew with Thomsons on the Dreamliner from Gatwick direct to Phuket and arrived at the hotel on Christmas Eve, where we were met by lovely friendly staff and a nice cold pineapple juice. We were checked in very quickly and our luggage taken to our Pool Access Room - (number 3139) which was spotless. We cannot fault this hotel, we wanted a lovely quiet relaxing holiday and this is exactly what we got. The staff were all lovely and so friendly, and the food was amazing. If you are on All Inclusive just beware that anything you take out of the fridge you have to pay for, which we though was a bit off, especially as we had already paid a fortune for the holiday ! This should have been included really. We went to James Bond Island which we booked through the Thomsons Rep. This was a VERY long trip, as we had to wake up at 4am!! Then you have to travel over 2 hours to a huge marina where we had to wait an hour and a half until other minibusses turned up with other tourists for the trips. A lot of hanging about until we finally got on board the speedboat for the trip. The trip itself was very good, but James Bond island was absolutely rammed with people. rather like a cattle market! We didn't get back from this trip until 7.15pm, exhausted!! If you do want to do this trip, I would recommend that you book i with the excursion guy at the Hotel as they go from a different place and it;s not such a long trip. We booked The Khao Lak Safari with his and this was brilliant - elephant trekking and bamboo rafting down a river - excellent. We also had 3 massages along thew beach which were amazing and so ridiculously cheap. Also went to the local market twice as it was a real eye opener! All in all we had a fabulous holiday, and will go back without a doubt. We loved it.More
Clean, spacious and extremely helpful staff
We have just recently returned from Thailand after spending Christmas and the New Year at The Merlin Hotel. My husband and I stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and were very pleased that we did. The breakfast was plentiful with lots of choice, certainly nothing to complain about. We had room service on a couple of occasions when we were a little under the weather and this was also very good. The gala on New Years Eve was brilliant. Staff went to a lot of trouble and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Pools were clean as all areas in this lovely large complex. Beach was fantastic. My only gripe would be that I thought it was a bit pricey and that a 10% service charge was added besides the VAT - a bit cheeky! We went into the main street of Khoa Lak and ate here a few times. So much choice its unbelievable and the quality outstanding - you must try the fresh fish - fabulous. We met with Mr Moo who organised for us to go and see the Lady Boy Show that I believe he is in charge of - absolutely hilarious. If you go to Khoa Lak you must go here. He also organised a trip riding on the elephants and canoeing. We had a fantastic time and lunch was included. He also arranged a car and driver to take us to Karon in Phuket as I have stayed the a couple of times - once 11 years ago and once 4 years ago. So glad we didn't stay there, it has changed so much and is somewhat grubby now. Overall, a fantastic time and I highly recommend it.More

Wonderful Christmas holiday
We visited the merlin from the 16-30th December 2016. This hotel is beautiful. Lovely big rooms, well decorated and kept clean and tidy by the cleaners. Lovely lush green surroundings with lots of wildlife around. We went AI and found it very useful especially with a 10 year old. Hotel staff were very friendly and always greeted you with a smile. If I were to pick fault I would say 2 restaurants to eat in gets a bit boring after 2 weeks, but I suppose those not on an AI basis would eat out. However, we spoke to some people who did this and they said the food was better in the hotel. The entertainment was a man with a guitar and this was repeated each night so I think a little variation would be better and although the Christmas Eve gala was a spectacular event as far as the food was concerned, the entertainment was amateurish. Furthermore, I'm not sure why but sun beds weren't aloud on the beach so this was a little disappointing. Took 2 trips. Elephant bathing (recommended as the elephants were well treated) and similian islands snorkelling. Both very good. Overall it was a lovely relaxing holiday with family. However a more lively holiday could be had if you wished, by grabbing a taxi into Khao Lak if this is more you. More
Nice place not good entertainment
The scenery is amazing and some staff are very kind but there are some who never smile and a a bit moody also they do not speak very well English . If you have young children it is relaxing but I don't think they will like the food. The activitie choices are good but you will have to book the day before. I would do the elephant bathing and the Syrian islands if you enjoy snorkelling. The James bound island is not very good because it is filled with tourists and very dirty. Beware of jelly fish and caterpillars. If you would like to know more then comment below thank you.More
Quiet, good food, spacious resort with good beach access
This is a lovely resort, its spacious with lots of quiet areas if required - I especially liked having a quiet spot to read as I don't want too much activity when I'm 'chilling out' and this resort certainly catered for this pre-requisite. Many of the pools were extremely quiet and you felt like you had your own pool sometimes as there were no other people around in them. The food is excellent, the A La Carte delicious and we really enjoyed the buffet as well. There was nothing I didn't like (apart from my tight waistband at the conclusion of the holiday). The Beach Bar for lunch is spot on also and had very tasty varied menu, you can have Thai food or even a tuna sandwich, burger, pizza etc if you are feeling the desire to have something more traditionally Western. The Thai options were amazing as you'd expect. It is very quiet in the evenings after dinner, we did sometimes feel that we could have done with something more entertainment wise, of an evening but did meet other couples to chat too which was nice. Unlike other resorts we have visited the bar tenders weren't very inclusive and were not trying to engage in conversation where previously we have built a rapport with the bar/waitress team this resort didn't have that ethos. We did head off to the main part of Khao Lak and had a brilliant night in the Happy Snapper (highly recommend) great live bands, singers and everyone very friendly and we all ended up dancing together. We also went to Bang Niang Market which we really enjoyed we weren't hassled to buy from the stall holders and could peruse at leisure, the street food was such good quality and extremely cheap. We just went in a taxi at a cost of 250 Baht and they were plentiful at post 2am when trying to get back to the resort. I wouldn't recommend the tour operator who ran the Elephant Bar just down from the resort, we found that you can organise most of the trips yourself and if you want someone to tell you about the history and information of the area there are better tour operators out there. We did a Similan Islands trip for snorkelling, not really a lot to see, I was lucky in that one of the other people on the excursion found the Clown Fish family, but the coral has been pretty badly damaged and according to our hosts the overpopulated trips have scared off many of the aquatic wildlife that used to roam freely. It was a disappointing trip and the speedboat ride was very cramped and a bit choppy, the hosts were lovely and had a tough job as only 3 of us (out of 30) could swim or snorkel. I wouldn't recommend to anyone who has snorkeled Indian Ocean previously but the water is clear but the hosts won't have time to show you the fish and name them etc as they will be tied up with the non-swimmers who just bob about around the boat. Our only real gripe with the resort was the bed - it was so uncomfortable some nights I couldn't sleep at all despite normally being an excellent sleeper - especially on holiday where I normally crash out. We did get mattress toppers put on but it didn't help despite frequent requests, my partner ended up with back problems by the end of the 2 weeks which he also put down to the mattress issue. This was a shame as otherwise we had a lovely stay in the resort and our room was otherwise very quiet you didn't hear other residents at all when in your room. The room is cleaned daily and very high standards throughout the resort. We didn't use the spa but did use the massage shacks to the left of the resort (as you're facing the sea) and the shops down from the resort, all very good massages and manicures. We also used the laundry service at the local shops which again was very good. The mini-bar isn't expensive but there are lots of shops nearby to buy supplies (at a fraction of the cost) that you have to pay for via the mini-bar but its handy to have if like me you end up pacing the room at 1am.More
