The Khao Lak Merlin Resort has one of the best postcodes in the area – it’s tucked away in acres of tropical rainforest, and gives you easy access to the town centre.
This place is set in 16 acres of tropical gardens, so it’s got a real away-from-it-all feel. Location-wise, it’s next to a white-sand beach and just a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Khao Lak.
Spread around the gardens are 4 curvy pools and a couple of restaurants. Rooms are tucked among the greenery, too – they’re done out in Thai style, with handcrafted teak and bamboo pieces.

We visited Merlin in 2004 so this was our second time here. It's a really beautiful hotel, the gardens are amazing. We actually loved everything about it, very friendly staff, excellent room service (for a lazy dinner in) , huge bathroom, and very comfortable bed. We had a room with our own pool with a waterfall and the water was warm and nice. The beach is excellent for long walks, no sun beds or sales , just a few restaurants with good and cheap food. We were here 3 weeks and loved every minute. The only sad thing are the cats, since not neutered there were ofcourse a lot of kittens. The hotel should neuter the ones they have and take care of them, they do good by taking mice and the guests enjoy their company. (Everyone was feeding them). So please look in to that, I dare not think what happens to all these kittens!! Otherwise this is a fantastic place and we highly recommend it!!More

Nice hotel out of Kaholak centre
We have just arrived back after a two week stay in the merlin hotel the hotel is in a fantastic quiet location and the grounds are are perfect if you don't want lots noise. Dependant on which room you get you will have your own private pool area or you can use the other two main pools which are never busy as people prefer to be on the sun loungers nearer the beach. We were on a bed and breakfast basis so can't comment on any other aspect of the dining as we ate out every night. The breakfast is on a patio area overlooking the pools and has a excellent variety to choose from but don't expect full English selection as the hotel caters for all nationalities but if you like cereals and bacon and eggs toast ect then you'll have plenty yo choose from. It's a buffet type so you just help yourself. The staff are very attentive and are on hand topping your tea and coffee up clearing away ect. We had a room on the second floor in one of the blocks away from the main area it had its own pool that all the rooms surround but very few people use so it's like having your very own pool. You are issued pool, towels that are replaced every evening in your room. The rooms are adequate with a mini fridge a tv air con tea and coffee making facilities. The room is cleaned every day and coffee replenished. You are given two bottles of complimentary water each day other than that everything in the mini fridge is chargeable. This hotel for the size is kept very nice and clean and is like a tropical garden you could wander round looking at the wildlife and see loads. At the reception area are two desks one for taxi ordering and the other for excursions we used the taxi one only once and it was the same price as the local taxi down the road. The excursion guy we didn't use as all will be explained. The village down the road is classed as Kaholak but isn't anywhere near the centre it's really just a tourist built area it's a two min walk down the lane and has supermarkets restaurants and tailors shops a few bars but as we learned most ain't owned by Thai people so if you want to eat out we ate across the main road so go past all the shops ect to the main road and across the road you have two traditional Thai restaurants no glitz but fantastic food and they will cook the food to your level of taste so if you like hot or mild and want the proper Thai experience these two are recommended locally. Also to the left as you stand at the main road you will find two restaurants about a 100 metres walk again which were very nice a tasty food. We decided to hire a motor bike as the roads have designated lanes for motorcycles now taking into consideration I only ride a scooter in Greece this was a decision not taken lightly but after 5 mins out on the road I felt very safe. We hired from the village and paid 250 baht per day but no motorbikes are insured in Thailand so take that into account it's all explained to you that if you damage it you pay for the damage we had it 5 days and everything was good their ain't many fuel stations so we just kept it topped up cost us 40 baht a day to fill. As we had the bike we did all the attractions independent and it's so cheap when you don't use the tour operators we did bamboo rafting and this was literally a fifteen min ride and cost us 800 baht and was a brilliant experience we rode to the elephant areas and trekking was going to be 1/3 of the price but we just sat and watched elephants on the riverside. We visited the market and moo moos cabaret show in khaolak this are a must for the experience. The main area of Kaholak is a ten min taxi ride and will cost you 150 baht to the start of Kaholak or 250 baht to the market still a cheap way to travel but we decided one trip was the bike hire for the day. We ate from street sellers to restaurants and as long as you use your own instinct you'll be fine. Any questions you have please feel free to e mail me at email@example.com I'll try to answer any questions. Lastly make sue you visit the tsunami Musial in Kaholak it's makes you realise what happened not very long ago.More
Really I would echo previous reviewer Sally, this is a great resort it is a large resort, we were lucky enough to have a private villa, these are well worth it, you have a private pool with the villas, large living and dining area, two bathrooms one really large with sunken bath. if you want to sunbathe on the sunbeds overlooking the beach they are rather crammed in in my opinion so having a private pool was perfect as I believe a lot of the rooms have terraces which don't really get the sun. Most staff very good apart from a certain bar man who couldn't even raise a smile which was a shame but mostly staff were really good as was the service. Again, as people have said, beach bar closes too early and entertainment is lacking, some of the hotels along the beach had made more of being beach side and put tables on the sand which was nice. Weather wasn't good unfortunately, constant cloud, but obviously Merlin can't do much about that!!!! Please feel free to message if you have any questions ðMore
Lovely quiet resort.
Beautiful quiet resort set amongst tropical plants and trees. Real back to nature feel. The rooms are wonderful, well designed, spacious with everything you could possibly need. We had a pool access room which was fabulous. Huge balconies then able to step into a pool surrounded by beautiful plants and trees. The staff were mostly brilliant. Everyone in the restaurants was amazing, great service and very helpful. Some of the barmen were a little grumpy. The food was excellent. Buffets were good with large variety. The a la carte was exceptional, fantastic quality and huge variety of Thai, English, international food all cooked beautifully. Pools were good. Swim up bar was great. Beach was beautiful and quiet too. Not good for snorkeling though. Only negatives were the entertainment and the fact that beach bar and pool bar shut at 8pm. Would have been nice to sit by the beach with a drink in the evening. The only bar in the evening for after dinner drinks was the lobby bar, which was well away from the beach. Entertainment was a few Thai dance shows and a guy crooning in the lobby bar. Extremely lacking in evening entertainment or just a decent bar open. Small town nearby with some good restaurants but we found food better at resort. Nice busy bars in town though. Overall great place with few negatives. More
