The Khao Lak Merlin Resort has one of the best postcodes in the area – it’s tucked away in acres of tropical rainforest, and gives you easy access to the town centre.
This place is set in 16 acres of tropical gardens, so it’s got a real away-from-it-all feel. Location-wise, it’s next to a white-sand beach and just a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Khao Lak.
Spread around the gardens are 4 curvy pools and a couple of restaurants. Rooms are tucked among the greenery, too – they’re done out in Thai style, with handcrafted teak and bamboo pieces.

I'm just about at the end of my second week at Merlin with another week to go. There are some quite good things about the hotel but also quite a few things that let it down. First the good stuff: The food is excellent and really can't be faulted. I'm here half board plus so start the day with a hearty breakfast. There is lots to choose from be it eggs your way, cereal, toast. The list goes on an on. Night time is dinner in the main restaurant. Full choice a'la carte menu. Not had a bad meal at all. The service in the restaurant is great with efficient and courteous staff. The rooms are ok depending on which room you are allocated. I was originally given one of the older rooms but moved to a modern style room. The older rooms just seem dark and dank and have general dirty feel to them. The newer rooms are indeed very modern but mine was dirty, dusty and generally unclean. After mentioning it to hotel management they gave it a good clean (which has not been repeated since). The newer rooms are quite noisy so if you don't want to hear your neighbours making the most of their time together take ear plugs. You might also need them if you like a lay in bed, as the cleaners and other staff do tend to be quite noisy chatting on the corridors early in the mornings The location of the hotel is quite remote. There is a nice little village at he end of the street that has restaurants and bars etc. but it is NOT in Khao Lak. You have to take a taxi to get you into the centre of Khao Lak. The not so good:- The staff: I've found it quite difficult with some of the staff here. The restaurant staff are great as are the room cleaners. The reception staff are really quite dismissive and unwelcoming. Ask them a question they answer it then walk away or as on one occasion give a dismissive hand wave. On arrival I didn't feel very welcomed and I guess that kind of put me on the back foot with them. I was also informed when I booked and again on arrival that there were two restaurants to choose from. One a'la carte and one buffet. However the buffet restaurant is now closed as it's low season. Nobody told me that. I just get the general feeling that as it's their low season standards are allowed to slip, they don't care if you ever come back (valued customers don't matter) and some staff missed out on the customer service training. Would I come back here? No, definitely not. It's overrated, it feels like it needs a really good clean and when I'm a paying customer I expect to be treated courteously. More
Stayed at Merlin Resort Khaolak. Superb hotel. Restaurant 1st class breakfast spotlesly clean. Staff so friendly polite and very helpful. Our room very spacious. Our cleaner left it immaculate. Clean towells and swimming towells changed daily. Would highly recommend this hotel. Area stands amongst varied tropical trees. Restaurants shops located nearby serve excellent meals and ensure they serve top quality meals to attract you to return again. Special mention to Outdoor bar and Grill best local restaurant. More
Stunningly Beautiful Hotel in Paradise!
We booked this hotel as we wanted something traditional and different from the usual new build resort hotels and this hotel was the perfect choice! The Merlin Khao Lak is the most stunning hotel in the most stunning location. The hotel is built on a hillside with the rainforest playing a big part in the beauty of this hotel. From entering the hotel at reception you are at the top of the hill and walking through the hotel takes you down through the rainforest over bridges that have streams full of fish below them towards the beautiful beach. We enjoyed walking the different routes to our villa each time admiring the scenery and wildlife that lives in the hotel grounds. We booked our holiday through Virgin Holidays and upgraded as much as we could to a delux pool access room. I done my research on the hotel and found that the best room was room 3143 which is on the side of the hotel where the new hotel is being built however it has the best view and most private of the pool access pools. I emailed the hotel and asked for this room and the manager told me that they would do their best to allocate this room to us. 2 days before we were due to leave for Thailand the hotel emailed me to say that they could not allocate us 3143 however had allocated us 3141 (which would have been my second choice anyway). I said that this was no problem. On arrival at the hotel I checked in and the manager told me that they had upgraded us complimentary to the hotels only 2 bedroom beach front Villa with private pool! We were taken through the hotel by the porter all the way down to the Villa which was 10 yards from the beach and was stunningly beautiful inside. The porter told us that the hotel only had 3 villas and the other 2 were 1 bedroom and they were behind ours! All rooms at the hotel come with a digital safe (easy to use) hairdryer, robes, slippers, flip flops, mosquito plugs and tablets and pool towels are changed every day! The villa was cleaned every day and fresh bottles of free drinking water left every day. I would after having stayed at the hotel say that if you are booking a Delux Pool Access Room the best room in my opinion is 3143 or 3141. Both these rooms have an amazing view, sun all day and pools that can't be accessed from anywhere other than the rooms decking! If you are booking 2 rooms then ask for 3143 and 3142 as these 2 rooms would mean you would have your own private family pool. Every pool access room has at least 2 rooms sharing the same pool if you have one on the waterfall. There are other rooms that have access to a bigger pool further up the waterfall however these rooms have no view and don't get the sun! If you are going to book this hotel between April and October then it is very quiet and I would say when we left on the 12th May the hotel was only 50% full at very most. The Buffet nights stopped on the 1st May and won't start again until October so the only dining option is the al a cart restaurant. We stayed B&B and I would recommend this as the hotel is not set up to be an all inclusive and there is no one about the restaurants or bars in the evening. There are plenty of supermarkets close to buy drinks etc very cheap and eating out nearby or in Khao Lak town will cost at a top restaurant for a couple £25 which would be for 2 courses and 2 beers each! We ate at Go Pong in Khao Lak on a number of evenings for £10 for both of us 2 courses and drinks and the best Thai food you will eat! If I had gone all inclusive at this hotel I would have been very annoyed with myself for doing so. We looked at the price of all inclusive and what it was for the 2 of us for the 15 nights we didn't spend our entire holiday including meals, drinks, trips, massages (every day)! Also there is nothing whatsoever going on in the hotel and the bar is empty, this is not a complaint as we always go out and about at night but if you were there a/I this could get boring! The mini bar in the room is not part of the A/I and the hotel has a separate cocktail list for a/I guests from the main one! Breakfast at the hotel is between 6:30 - 10am and there is loads to choose from. Omelette and egg station, waffle and pancake station, cereal, fresh fruit, cooked items including fried rice dishes and the usual fresh breads and cakes! Eat as much as you like! Dinner we ate at the hotel once and it was lovely food however we were put off by the fact that 7% tax and 10% service charge is added to your bill. We also felt there was much more choice to eat down the road and in Khao Lak. The staff at the hotel are fantastic and can't do enough to help you. If you have any issues they will be sorted almost immediately by one of the team of maintenance staff not that we had anything other than a blown bulb and the pool light not working! A taxi to Khao Lak at the bottom of the road is 150 Bhat to the centre of Khao Lak or 250 to the Bang Niang Market which is further along the road! It's only a 10 minute ride to Khao Lak centre (it's not walkable). Bang Niang Market is only open 3 days a week Mon, Wed, Sat. Brilliant Thai street food and the best bar ever in the middle of it Mr Chay bar! The Tsunami memorial is directly across the road from the entrance to the market. Take Sterling (English notes only) money (or own currency) to Thailand and change what you need at one of the many exchange places at the bottom of the road which all offer the best daily rate and it's commission free. It also takes seconds for them to do it! The hotel changes money but at a terrible rate! 39 Bhat to the £ compared to 44 down the road! The best massage place near the hotel is Dok Bua which you will find next to Black Jack bar. Brilliant Thai massage for 300bhat for an hour! This is a proper massage, not like the gimmicky ones on the beach which we found rubbish. Dok Bua we visited every day for 10 days! There are a number of bars and restaurants 200 yards from the hotel, there are plenty of exchange places, supermarkets, chemists and massage places so don't worry about not being in Khao Lak Centre. Lovely fruit shakes at the wee bamboo place to the left of the taxi rank which also does the best bowl of Tom Yum Soup ever, Mr Few it's called. Siam Tumeric we found was the best restaurant overall near the hotel. The food is fantastic, Thai, seafood, Indian all cooked perfect and served to your table at the same time. We found most restaurants just bring your food when it's ready and sometimes I had my main course 10 minutes before my girlfriend. This is just the Thai way but not at Siam Tumeric! Again during the months of May - Oct the bars and restaurants are very quiet and not much happening after about 9pm! Khao Lak centre is exactly the same with no one about and most places closed by 10pm. Another tip if your booking trips, use a company called Khao Lak Vista Tours, they get excellent reviews on trip advisor. If you use one of the places down the road they are just an agent for someone and you could end up on a tour with 20-30 people. Khao Lak Vista is the company that takes you on the tour you book. They take no more than 10 people on any tour and their staff are excellent. Easy to book with via email when you arrive at the hotel and they take NO money until the tour is complete. They have a fantastic web site with all the tours and they are worth spending a little extra for a worry free perfect tour. Please don't worry about the construction going on next door it will not spoil your holiday. Yes there is noise but it's minimal and is drowned out behind the building and by the noise of the waterfall. We couldn't hear anything over at the villa which is at the other side of the hotel however there is a massive area to sunbathe next to the villa and on the seafront where most guests spent their day and you could hear nothing from the construction site. Oh and finally don't waste your time taking mosquito repellent from Europe as it is a complete waste of time! When you arrive go down to the mini mart and buy a spray made by Johnson and Johnson called "OFF"! Its in a bright orange can and not available in the the U.K. It will cost you £4 a can but it is the best Mosquito stuff we have ever used and you will need it.More
stayed here 23rd April-4th may stayed bed and breakfast , its a beautiful hotel set in lovely grounds surrounded by wildlife , beautiful beach lovely walk in evening , if you turn to the left and walk u will come to few bars on beach / thai massage which is much cheaper than hotel. out of the hotel is few shops and restaurants I recommend hire a scooter cost like 200baht a day u can take your self into town about 15 mins away driving , moo moos bar is really good night , you have the market , also white sand beach and coconut beach about 20 minutes on scooter definitely recommend , we even drove on the scooter to James bond island which took about 1.30 hours then jumped on the boat alot cheaper than a booking through rep! you wont be disappointed on this hotel if you just wont to relax, my only down fall is that the hotel hair dryer caught fire and burnt my hand and stomach so maybe they should check them once in awhile other that than it fab couldn't here building work so don't let that put you off. Firstly yes there is a new hotel being built right next door however the noise is minimal and we hardly knew it was happening so don't let this put you off or change hotel as The Merlin is a little piece of paradise.. Arriving at the hotel after 2 flights and many hours travelled we were greeted with smiles , cold towels and a refreshing drink (first impressions matter) Our cases were quickly taken to our room (deluxe room 2204) and we were shown the air con controls ect , the room itself was beautiful with a very large bath and separate shower, balcony with good comfy furniture. There is a kettle (two coffee tea and sugar left everyday plus 2 complimentary bottles of water ) a fridge filled with mini bar items which were on the pricey side however there is a price list so your choice wether to use the mini bar or not) There is also a safe in the room ! The room was cleaned everyday even the day we were leaving ( we asked for a late checkout 8pm which was given to us free of charge we gave plenty of notice when we asked) If you are bed and breakfast there are no facilities to make food in your room! Breakfast /hotel food / bar We went bed & breakfast as we didn't want to be tied to the AI the food at breakfast was buffet style with a lot of choice omelettes and pancakes cooked to order all food was fresh and very nice . We also ate at the hotel beach bar you get a 15% discount with a card given to you on arrival the food was excellent with a great view. Drinks at the hotel bars / pool bar are on the high side compared to the town and beach shacks but it's expected . Pools are great there are four and all cleaned daily the sea however is beautiful refreshing and warmer . I was stung by a jelly fish first day they keep a vinigar mix by the beach bar for this and the stings soon wares off . This hotel is a little piece of paradise very well maintained beautiful gardens and nothing is too much trouble .The staff and all the local people we met were lovely . Trips ... We did the elephant bathing booked through Mr moo on the high street after the supermarket this trip is a must the elephants are all girls and treated to very high standards from what I witnessed the people who take you on the short trek and bathing are very friendly they take all the photos you want and will help with any questions . They also do professional photos in a frame at 300 bhat each . Bananas for the elephants at 50 bhat a basket which they enjoy ALOT ð. Bang niang night market is great a good atmosphere, again very friendly and the street food is a must try we also went to the international tsunami museam which is across the road and open until late its 300 bhat entry per adult all proceeds going to the charity . Local area.... Outside the hotel down the bank is a small group of shops/ bars/ restaurants We used The tiger bar (free WiFi) good for early and late drinks. Restaurant wise we used Siam turmeric near the end of the road on the left very nice food and drink also Thai kitchen again excellent food . Taxi rank is at the bottom of the bank 250 bhat takes you into khao Lak main town . If you want nightlife I would say this is not the place it's very quiet of an evening and the perfect place to unwind and relax which is why we chose it . We spent most afternoons at the beach shack first on the left as you leave the Merlin via the beach frount good prices nice cocktails and run by a lovely local family . They do barbeque corn on the cob which is amazing also the chicken which is a must all under 60 bhat each and well worth it cocktails were 70 bhat local beer 60 bhat. If you walk along the beach to the left untill you can't go any further you will see an entrance up steps and come across Poseidon bungalows which also has an amazing restaurant on stilts with stunning views and beautiful fresh food they are very welcoming ... We loved this holiday the area and the people we wouldn't hesitate to return ENJOY. More
