Lovely hotel, food yummy!

I'm a bit overdue writing this. We stayed here in July last year, arriving in quite late from Glasgow. We received a lovely platter of cold meats, bread, and fruit in our room, which we both appreciated. My husbands reaction to our room was wow! We usually travel to Mexico, where the hotels and service are superb, due to family commitments we could not travel as far. We were not disappointed in this hotel, where the staff worked so hard to look after everyone, the food is excellent, and the Manageress is everywhere in the hotel, ensuring everything runs smoothly. We have recommended this hotel to friends, family and colleagues, and will at some point return in the future.More

Very good hotel in Playa

A lot is said about this hotel and I agree with most people; the hotel is very good, especially for the price you pay. Everybody is doing his/her utmost to give you a good time. This is the best hotel I have ever staid in on Gran Canaria. I asked for a quiet room and got one at the end of the hotel. They upgraded me to a suite and the room was fantastic. A lot of suites do not have sea view and mine didn't either but it was fine with me. The rooms are very clean and have new furniture. At the moment the hotel is redecorating the rooms and you have a big chance that you will have a redecorated room. The hotel has a little Andalucian/Arabique theme. There is a small welness center (FKK, naked) on the tenth floor with one sauna and one steam room. It opens at 3 o'clock and closes at 7.30. The food the hotel serves is very good. The buffets are great and every night different. There is live cooking for hot fish and meat dishes. If I have to mention one point of improvement than it will be the organisation of the restaurant. Firstly, I think that the restaurant is a bit too small for the hotel. It becomes very hectic at night and it is the only moment of the day that I felt that I was being part of a tourism machine. Personnel becomes nervous and this is not beneficial for the atmosphere. Secondly, the waiters work very hard but I seriously think that the hotel have to reconsider their (old fashioned) management system. There are hostesses, waiters where you can order your drinks, supervisors and redtaurantmanagers (at least it looks like this). A bit complicated and perhaps relatively too many supervisors compared to the waiters? Another option might be shifts. An early (19.00) and a late (21.00) shift. Sandy Beach is situated in walking distance of the beach and the Yumbo Center. For guests arriving by the regional bus from the airport: get off at the Yumbo Center bus stop.More

Sandy Beach

Sandy Beach was very relaxing. The Breakfast was great with a big selection, although the ques at the busy times were a little chaotic. We would stay there again in the future. Great location, friendly staff.More

2nd visit

Last year we stayed at Sandy Beach for one week and liked it so much that we returned for two weeks, and upgraded our room, this year. From the moment you arrive and are greeted by the friendly and helpful reception staff you are made to feel like a valued customer. We contacted the hotel in advance and asked if it would be possible to have a room near one of the 3 naturist terraces as we made good use of them last year. We were delighted to find that our room could not have been nearer and, once again, we made good use of these facilities and loved the improvements made in this area since we were last there. The robes and slippers provided came in very useful and we loved the bowl of fresh fruit waiting for us in our room. The espresso maker was an added bonus but, as we also wanted to make the odd cup of tea, a kettle and mugs was put in our room within a short time of us requesting it. The beds were very comfortable and I especially liked the memory foam pillow as I have similar at home. The whole place is spotlessly clean. The pool, although not big, is nice to use and the pool man is very obliging in finding you a sun lounger, pads etc. We also liked the fact that people were not allowed to reserve sun loungers before 9am although there were some very sad people queuing up every morning from around 8.30am. No matter what time of day we arrived at the pool the hard working pool man always found a couple of loungers for us. The service at the pool bar can be a little slow but you aren't going to die of thirst for having to wait a little while and the staff there do their best to serve as fast as possible. The food is good and there is plenty of choice even for the most picky eater and the waiting staff are, mostly, on top of serving drinks, clearing tables etc in the quickest time. Almost all of the staff seem to be able to switch between several languages at the drop of a hat which is more than you can say about hotels in the UK where, these days, you are lucky if they can even actually speak English. Congratulations must especially go to the waiter in the entertainment lounge who works his socks off trying to keep everyone supplied with drinks, particularly in the half hour before the 11pm drinks curfew for the all-inclusive guests. The guests here do seem to be mostly German with British visitors being the second most prolific, but we did meet some French and Swedish couples whilst we were there. The hotel is perfectly placed for a 5 minute stroll to the beach or a 10 minute stroll to the Yumbo centre with its bars, shops, clubs, restaurants and to catch a local bus. We've been to Gran Canaria 5 times and stayed at Sandy Beach for the last 2 visits. Now we wouldn't stay anywhere else. In our opinion the best hotel in Playa del InglesMore

Great hotel with brilliant food

Just returned from two weeks at the Sandy Beach in Playa del Ingles Five star food but only four star service - in places. To be fair, I can see that the hotel wants to provide you with all the relaxation you need on holiday but the waiter service in the restaurant areas was a bit "hit and miss", especially on the first week of our holiday. This improved on the second week, as far as I could see joining in with the return of the manageress. A black coated waiter took your order and left two slips on the table: one, a receipt; and the other, an order to be picked up by a member of staff wearing a yellow waistcoat. If you did not "catch their eye" you could have been left waiting. On a number of occasions, friends met whilst on holiday mentioned getting their drinks towards the end of their meal, especially if placed at the back of the terrace - and this was not indicative of any nationality. . Plates were cleared and tables were set very quickly by the yellow waistcoated friendly staff. The actual pool bar was where a fault lay. You could be left "mid-order", ie order being placed and awaited, when a 'tipping' holidaymaker was given preferential treatment and you were left waiting. I believe this was expressed in a former review. A formal complaint at the time was taken seriously by an under-manager. The girls at breakfast time remembered if you wanted tea or coffee brought to the table. The bar service at the restaurant bar and in the saloon bar was excellent and friendly staff remembered your drinks. The nightly entertainment could have been better. As said, the food was five star: steaks and other meat grilled before you; a carvery area; fish freshly cooked; any number of other hot dishes on a nation inspired nightly rota (Swiss night, Austrian night, Canary night etc); lovely cooked vegetables; many different pasta dishes; fresh salads; desserts galore - you name it, they had it. The chefs were working hard continuously. You could not fault the food at all.. Smoking and non-smoking tables were far too close together if eating outside. It was not widely made known that you could eat in a non-smoking area inside. The maid service was excellent. Clean towels every day and bed linen changed regularly. We travelled with Jet 2 and after a very nice welcome by the hotel were placed on Floor One which did not have a view at all, looking out onto a busy and loud road but we were only in our room to shower and change and sleep so this was not a problem for us. We met other people who had complained and the management had changed their rooms without a problem. Our room, overall, was large and our bathroom had a walk in shower and the force of water was great. A small kettle along with two mugs was in every room and you left your order of tea or coffee with Reception and it was placed in your room for the next morning. There was a flat screen TV which had many channels. (This developed a fault while we were there and on Reception being contacted it was looked at more or less right away. It was more a service fault rather than an appliance fault and we couldn't get Sky news but we did have BBC news and other channels.) The first two floors were the original hotel, I think, and other floors had been added on. The remaining rooms looked out onto the pool which I thought was a little small for such a large hotel, but the water temperature was just right. Tile work was going on around the pool and on the smoking section of the sun lounging terrace whilst we were there. Mattresses are brought to your sunbed every time you leave down your pool towel and the towels are provided daily for a deposit of €10 per person and your money is refunded on production of your receipt at checkout. The safe costs €2 per day. We managed to keep our room until pick up at 6pm as it was not being used straight away and were not charged for this privilege. It is the hotel's policy not to charge you if the room is available - and this was a first for us, so top marks there! There are shower rooms available with clean towels if you have a late pickup and are unable to keep on your room after checking out time of 12 noon. We had a lovely holiday.More
