We spent July 10th to July 17th at this resort for our 5 year wedding anniversary. We flew into Cancun and were picked up by our tour reps and taken directly to the resort. The drive is approximately 30 minutes, but it felt shorter as there is quite a bit to look at. When we arrived at our resort, the bell boy came right up to us and tagged our luggage and asked us to go check-in. Check-in was painless and easy and they offered us a couple drinks (dos tequila). We were asked to upgrade, but we declined. We aren't certain of the price we would have paid if we did. When it was time to go to our room, tug bell boy grabbed or previously tagged luggage and put us on a golf cart and drove us to our room. He showed us a bit of the resort and explained a few things to us in order to place us on the grounds. He carried the bags all the way up to our room and took the time to show us how things worked. Arrival was easy and stress free. Our room was great! Nice Jacuzzi tub, decent size tv, comfy couch, King size bed, double vanity sink, seperate toilet room, beautiful shower, mini-bar fridge stocked daily and large table. The patio is a good size; we hung the hammok they had and used it daily. There are two adjustable chairs and a small table out the too. The air conditioning was also very efficient, it cooled the room in no time! Restaurants - it was a different but an amazing experience to eat at these restaurants. We mainly ate at cocotal in the mornings, they offer pretty much everything from small smoothie shots to Homer Simpson pink frosted donuts and even an omelet station. The orange juic is freshly squeezed and my wife said she didn't even need milk to drink her coffee. Lunch - our favourite spot was JoJo's. Highly recommend everything on this menu. Octopus Salad was amazing and the fish of the day was nicely seasoned and cooked. The view is also great as you are pretty much right at the beach. La Isla was good too, but because of it's location it got hotter very quickly. The food was still great though. For supper, we tried to hit up everything. We ate at Cocotal twice, Mexican Rincon once, Fuentes (reservation required 2-3 days in advance) once, D'Italian Villas once as well. All were great, but our favourites were the Italian and Cocotal. Room service was a life saver, the burgers were awesome, and, who am I kidding, it was all good. Expect to wait about 30 to 45 minutes for your food, so order early. There is a direct line to room service on your phone. We also received a complmentary dinner on the beach for sitting through a sales presentation. That dinner was by far our best of the whole trip. We paid extra for lobster, but it was worth it! Service, they go above and beyond your needs. If you need something, the personal concierge will do everything they can to make sure you are happy. They are there from 9-5 after that you need to go to the lobby if you have any concerns. Entertainment was pretty good. They usually have someone singing from 8:30 to 9:30 and then the main entertainment starts at 9:45. When we went they had magic, circus, el dorado idol, Michael Jackson, fire show and Mexican Nights. Michael Jackson was the most popular by far. Pools were amazing and day beds were usually open if you showed up at about 8:30. We mainly stayed in Fuentes pool as it is cooler and it does have a swim-up bar. Drinks were not watered down and tasted amazing. Fuentes connects to Spot pool which also has a swim-up, so it was nice to take a stroll down the lazy river. Activities on the resort are plentiful, from air rifle shooting, archery, wine tasting, cigar rolling and beach volleyball are just a few of the many things to do. We were so pleased with everything that we decided against an excursion in order to do everything. The Beach is beautiful and they are trying to recreate a reef so there are concrete blocks and sandbags scattered across the beach. If you go snorkeling you can see the difference it makes and it actually is a thing of beauty. There are thousands of fish there, I swam right into a school of fish and was blown away by its beauty. Overall, we would go back and planned on bringing our friends or family as we are proud to have stayed and enjoyed this resort.More
The best hotel I've stayed at. Excellent service, accommodation, food and very friendly staff who couldn't do enough for you.The beach was lovely and kept clean as were the pool areas, really enjoyed al a carte service much better than buffet as restaurants clean and not lots of wasted food which you can see when buffet serviceMore
Recent Stay at El Dorado Royale July 2017
I wish I give 5 stars, but I simply cannot. The overall Resort property is BEAUTIFUL! The landscaping and upkeep was great. Room service and housekeeping services were great as well. My reason for not giving a 5 start rating revolves around the interaction with staff members. Some of the staff at the restaurants appeared to be racist towards me and 3 of my friends; who happen to be African American Women. We very pleasant, kind and courteous but at many of the places we dinned at, staff would overlook us when it came to being seated, questioned us if we wanted to order an additional item off of the menu if we didn't like. Even the bartenders looked a bit irritated when we came to order drinks. I was so appalled because if my memory served me correctly, my friends and I paid just as everyone else on the resort property paid to received equal treatment and services (excluding being in presidential suite, etc. And yes despite our treatment, we still tipped our servers and bartenders. The shuttles for use on the property could have been a bit better but it was not horrible. In my experience I believe that the servers should not have had bad attitudes and exchange dirty stares and whispers among their co-workers. I do understand, that EVERYONE has their days, but if you are employed somewhere that is known to serve people of different races and nationalities people should be treated fair and equal. Other than the horrible dinning (customer service) experience, the Resort itself and the variety and quality of the food was really awesome.More
Went with a Group of 14, Was Not Disappointed
I was the organizer of a college reunion for a group totaling 14 in all (ages 29-39). We had an amazing time. I would recommend this resort for people looking for an un-hassled, up-scale experience in the Rivera Maya. Some minor inconveniences and flaws did not diminish this 5 star review and I plan on booking with a Karisma resort in the future. For those who continue to read, be prepared, I am thorough (a.k.a long-winded), and may have had a couple of glasses of wine while writing this review. However, I feel that I am very fair and will give you a great idea of what we experienced. Check- In 10/10 Check in was a great experience. Francisco helped us and was efficient, friendly, and helpful. We saw him 4 more times, and I was so happy to see a familiar face I knew I could count on! The concierge offers you a drink during the check-in process and sparkling wine is kept on ice in the air-conditioned lobby. They then coordinate a bell-boy to deliver you and your baggage to your rooms. Very good job here. Staff 10/10 The staff, in all areas, are friendly. Walking on any path you will be greeted with a "Hola!" and a smile from any employee, be it service people to grounds keepers. The resort places a precedent on the experience. When you tell a person "Thank you", they reply "It's my pleasure" without fail. The waiters in the restaurants offer hand sanitizer, ask about allergies, drape your napkin on your lap, and are quick and efficient in clearing. Sometimes the poor hostesses do seem a bit harassed, especially during peak restaurant hours (more below) Personal Concierge: 10/10 This was great part of the resort. There is a team that is set up to help coordinate issues, reservations, etc for a block of rooms. They helped us get into a locked safe, hung a hammock, and set up several reservations for our big, obnoxious party (Thanks Stephanie). Also, they heard that we had a rough time on our first night of getting into a restaurant, and made reservations for us at a restaurant that was not normally up for reservations. We really appreciated her going above and beyond what was normal. Cleanliness/Appearance 10/10 I have been to resorts that have public restroom, especially ones that are damp and near the beach. Usually they are smelly and dank. ALL THE BATHROOMS, even the public ones, were clean and smelled fresh, like citrus. This is huge for me. It really speaks to how far the staff go to ensure the cleanliness of their facility. Small knock on the fact that sometimes the wash cloths for hand drying ran out, and there were no air dryers to supplement. The rooms were always clean, the restaurants and bars had great decor, the rooms were inviting. Fantastic! Rooms 10/10 The rooms, even the low-tiered ones like the ones we got, were stylish, spacious, and perfect. The staff was fantastic, keeping things clean, but undisturbed. I feel they were trustworthy because our poor housemaid Reyan kept leaving her tips on the counter!!! We ended up leaving them in obvious places like on the food plates to be taken away or with a note for her. She was great! Plus, DAT TURN DOWN SERVICE! We would come back and our bed would be turned down, the pillows put away, mood light on, and music from the T.V. Such a welcoming thing! Drinks 8/10 This only gets a lower mark because I'm a little picky. I found the mixed "resort" type drinks to be a little too sickly sweet. Please keep in mind that I am a fitness nut, and sweet things turn me off. 90% of others will find them fine, and did, as I saw a TON of them being mixed. However, the liquor was name brand and plentiful. Once i found my drink (long island iced teas y'all) I was good. Bartenders were great (Marcos). The drinks at the exclusive bars like Bellini's and Martini were a cut above, so be sure to stop by. Food 8/10 TL;DR: Above average food, longer waits, very accommodating to allergies/dietary restrictions This is a gourmet experience resort, and they sell it as such. In my opinion, the food is better than other resorts (way better than any I have been at), but it is not necessarily "fine-dining". Please keep that in mind when setting expectations. Breakfast: Cocotal was our favorite, full buffet with good table service. OMG, dat french toast! Lunch: The Spot is perfect for buffet, La Isla very tasty, and Kampai was nice to go to during a non-peak hour (Rogelio was great!) Dinner: DO NOT GO TO DINNER DURING PEAK HOURS!!! In groups larger than 2, you will wait a while between 7-8:30. Go early, or be prepared to wait at the bar. When ordering, order off of EVERY course of the menu because portions are typically small, especially at D'Italia and Santa Fe. Cons: Sometimes the restaurants are a little understaffed, we had a dinner that lasted 2 hours at D'Italia, and we left before dessert. Also, some of our guys had to order seconds (and wait) due to portion size. Over all a good experience. You just have to get the hang of the way things run PERK: 24/7 no-charge room-service. Very helpful if you are going on an early trip or the portion size just didn't do it for you. Not spectacular, but not bad either. Order 45 mins in advance. Dress Code: 9/10 I personally don't mind the dress code, but I actually researched it. I know that you cannot wear flip flops to dinner or men cannot wear sleeveless shirts at any time. That being said, I think that they should relax the no-sleeves rule for men, at least at lunch. A few of our guys had a long hike to change, and women could get in with a bikini and a shoulder cover. Not exactly fair. Beach 8/10 If you've read reviews, you know that this resort is not on a pristine, white-sand beach. There is quite a bit of coral that makes it uncomfortable to walk in shallower areas. HOWEVER, knowing this, you will also see that they have set up nice wave breaks that make the wading area tranquil as well as artificial reefs that attract lots of fish for the free snorkling (pro tip, take some pineapple with you for your own personal fish-a-palooza). Nice palapas, charis, beds, and cabanas for grabs, but get up early to claim them. We loved the beach. Angela was a great waitress that was attentive and speedy! Activities 9/10 Full disclosure, I did not participate in many activities, so I don't know how fun they were. However, there are lots of things to do, so you can feel ok spending more money, as there is plenty to keep you entertained for free! Gym, Yoga, pottery painting, cooking lessons, green house tours, etc. They are not push to get you to participate. HOWEVER, they do see the spa and massage treatments hard, even when you are chilling on the beach. Be prepared on that. Other Stuff: -Turtles nest on the beach, leave them alone, live in the moment, and do not flash them with your camera or they will run away! It was super cool to see them! Conclusion (Whew!) This was a great place, but I am a rational person. Know that this is a resort for a LOT of people, but they make an effort to personalize. Figure our how the restaurants work, and the dress codes. Be prepared for up-selling on massages, wine, saki, beef, etc. We actually bought up to the wine pairing at Fuentes dinner theater to go with the meal. Meal oh-hum, wine quite nice. They try to be environmentally friendly. They accommodate allergies. A great experience for my fiancee and our friends.More
The grounds are beautiful, and the beach is great too. However transportation inside the resort is very poor, some of the restaurants need a lot of improving, and if you do not mind waiting over an hour in some of the restaurants this place is for you. However overall was a good vacation, but not great. If this hotel was a 3 star hotel it would have been a great vacation. More
