Amazing stay, rooms do need some TLC
Me and my boyfriend stayed here in May for 2 weeks and I have to say we had an absolutely fantastic holiday! However, I do have to say I wouldn't travel to Jamaica in May again simply because the weather really wasn't fantastic, a good 4 days it rained all day leaving not much to do as the hotel wasn't overly equipped for when it rained. Everyone pilled into the sports bar and just wasn't great. But when it was sunny it was amazing. Staff - The staff at this hotel are unbelievable . . everyone in Jamaica was actually! Every single person smiles at you every day and says hello and most stop to have a chat with you as well. The bar staff at the sports bar and the swim up bar were great, so entertaining and chatty! One of the gardeners Nicholas (I hope that's his name) was the most hard working person I have ever seen, was non stop all day but still managed to crack a smile and ask how you were, great guy! Wanted to give him a tip before we left but we couldn't find him! The only thing I would say is I was offended on 5 different occasions being offered to this "VIP breakfast" which is for over 30s and considering me and my boyfriend are in our early 20s I found it really offensive that every single person kept assuming we were over 30 and when we said we weren't they were shocked, so maybe need some training around identifying peoples ages without offending them. Should never assume because someone is tall that they are any older! Food - I really can't fault the food in any way, always a nice selection at the buffet, our favorite restaurant was the Italian, we must have went 4 times altogether! We didn't know that you could get more than one starter as when we first went the portions were tiny but it is because you can have more than one thing! The lasagna and asparagus risotto was unbelievable! Opa was really nice as well, nice to try some different styles of food. Enjoyed the Chinese restaurant as well. We did not like the Mexican restaurant, staff were great but the food just isn't great. Fajitas come already made for you which would be better if you could put together your own, Nacho cheese isn't nice, we tried it on two separate occasions and wasn't impressed. Also, the steakhouse was awful, we struggled to get in one night as it was so busy so we went the next night and the food was just not nice. Boyfriend had to send his steak back 3 times as it kept coming back rare when he asked for medium and he eventually got a steak that was well done and he just settled for it as he was starving. Coffee shop is lovely and so is the jerk chicken hut!! Entertainment - There was plenty entertainment throughout the day, quizzes by the pool, water activities, games etc. When it came to night me and my boyfriend struggled, there was the shows that are on which are great for families but as a young adult I can't stand them. After a certain time the place goes dead and the sports bar is meant to get more lively but there is just no atmosphere. So we went to bed early most nights (and so we could get up early to catch as much sun as possible). Rooms - The rooms desperately need some TLC! I was quite disappointment when we arrived to see the rooms, the bathrooms looked like they are falling apart, shower head hanging from the ceiling and hardly any water came out the shower head (but that could just be down to the water pressure) the water can also go from scolding hot to freezing cold! The A/C was a nightmare and you couldn't change the temperature . . you could try press any button but it wouldn't change! I would have preferred a room on a higher floor down at the end of the corridor as we could hear people coming in and out the elevator all day/night. Balcony door was a nightmare to open and shut and looked a rusty mess! Beds were extremely comfy however and the USB plugs by the pillows was so handy to charge phones. TV channels was good - plenty choices for watching films on rainy days. Safe worked great and plenty storage in the cupboards. Also you get bags of blue mountain coffee in your room which is AMAZING! I wonder what the upgraded rooms look like, they might be a lot nicer! Pool/Beach - I LOVED the lazy river!!! The slides were good fun as well - all in all I absolutely loved the pool area, you would struggle to get a bed on the beach as a lot of people get up early to catch the sun, but i loved being round the adults only pool, there was not a kid in sight and was great to just nip in the pool and cool down at the swim up bar! Reggae music playing is just so relaxing - there was a large group of Americans that insisted on blaring their own awful music which I thought was selfish - people come to Jamaica for the reggae not to listen to abba or Robbie Williams so if you want to listen to your own music put your headphones in!! The beach was lovely as well, we walked all the way down to the bottom of the stretch of beach and we met to many locals and an artist Ian Hill (again hope that's his name) and they are so welcoming and just want you to experience the real Jamaica, offered to go fishing with one guy who caught a massive barracuda fish - Jamaicans are the most laid back nicest people I have met! We bought a piece of art from Ian as he used to have a shop but his land was taken away from him so now he just sells his art on the beach and his work is beautiful, he just wishes more tourists would walk down the beach and meet the locals. Also, expect to see stray dogs. I am a massive dog lover so I would go and give them water and food and we even seen a litter of puppies that ended up getting rescued some days later. They are so friendly and I was happy to go see them every day! Trips - Would recommend mystic mountain trip, you get to go up a mountain on like a ski lift, unbelievable views - was a bit scary at first. Then you can go zip lining and bobsledding - bob sledding was great fun, don't put the breaks on and its so fast! Wish the ride was a bit longer. Ricks cafe was amazing - SHOUT OUT TO KELLY TUI STAFF - she was amazing at helping us go to ricks cafe as part of a trip on a day that Thomson did not have the excursion going as our friends were staying over at the sensatori and wanted to see them before we went, she went above and beyond to get it organised so thank you! Cool Runnings - wasn't all it was cracked up to be, the dunns river falls experience was amazing, so scary and gets your adrenaline pumping! But the actual "boat party" bit was a let down, takes 15/20 to get to the place on the boat and back again, wasn't worth it I would say! And this was the only trip that people kept asking for tips and it put me off completely! All in all I would definitely recommend this hotel as although the rooms weren't quite 5* quality the rest of the hotel facilities and staff make up for it. I definitely want to try the new sister hotel to see what their rooms are like, we will definitely be back to Jamaica - loved every second of it and just sad that we haven't traveled there sooner!More
Family vacation with pre-teens
Let me start by saying thank you to Michael McHugh from Dream Makers Vacation Services, because if it wasn't for him I likely would have switched resorts based off of previous reviews. After much research, I had decided the Royalton ticked all of our boxes for the family. I am used to taking reviews with a grain of salt and know that our family travels often and is good at going with the flow. That said, I was still nervous. Michael said all of the people he sent loved it there, and then he and his family stayed at the sister property Blue Waters and had a good time. I will try not to get wordy, so I will go by categories, but suffice it to say I have no idea what people complain about. Check In- flight was 2 hours late, Amstar ready for us, and a little over 30 min after exiting the airport we were at the resort. Had a Diamond Club Family Room reserved, it was ready. Check in took 10 min. Met our Butler and went to the room, followed by much needed dinner. Room - as advertised, beautiful view from 7th floor, great balcony, stocked fridge with drinks, A/C cool, but not cold. Would like to note - pocket doors to boys bunk beds worked well, but no vent in there so had to leave them open at night so they good stay cool. No problems with elevator service. Butlers - Stacy and Javar - Spectacular service. Asked them to decorate room for my son's 11th bday - it was spectacular. Checked on us and did little things to make us feel special, never too obtrusive and always available. Make sure and ask for a bottle of wine in the room while the kids are in the kids club :) Restaurants - all of them good - shrimp consistently good regardless of preparation and venue. Loved Hunter's (ate there twice), Zen was great, Italian good, and the buffet (great selection). At dinner the buffet has fish that will be cooked right in front of you; breakfast at buffet had plenty of options. Kids club - my 11 and 13 year old felt they were too old, but still had fun for the 1.5-2 hours a day I had them go. The caregivers were sooo nice. Make sure and send your kids for the foam party - that was the best. AC was good there and a nice break from the sun. Would love to see a few bigger kid xbox games, they would have stayed longer. For those interested in roof tennis on astroturf, racquet and balls checked out there. Bars - all good. variety of drinks available. sometimes didn't have all ingredients as previously noted on other reviews, but I found lovely substitutes and had no issues. Kids loved the drinks and had different wrist bands for no alcohol. Staff - hands down the best staff I ever had at a resort or hotel. I have never left a place feeling that I had made friends until this trip to the Royalton White Sands. From the butlers (Stacey and Jevar - you rock), to Kevon who serenades regularly in the front lobby, to Saudria in Hunters (reason we went back and asked to sit in your section), to Damone in Opa, to Tanesha (who shared a bday with my boy and was so kind) and of course the ladies in the kid's club. Those were the stands outs, but truly everyone we met was a winner! Excursions - we did the Cool Runnings catamaran snorkel and Dunn's River Falls trip. Highlight of our trip. It was good for us and the boys. We enjoyed the snorkel time, the falls were great. Yes its commercialized, totally expected that, still very neat and something you should do once. Took about an hour by van with good AC to get there. Pick up was 10am and were dropped off at 6:00pm. We skipped on the video and purchased one family photo for $10 - turned out great. We stayed a week, had a lot of family time and had enough variety that nobody really complained. Total win. It is a beautiful place and the water is great. Weather app said rain everyday, only rained 2 days for less than an hour. The world is a big place so rarely do we go back somewhere a second time, but I'm making an exception and will start looking for shorter get aways when relaxation is necessary. Less than 4 hours straight flight from Dallas, short ride to the perfect resort. Totally doable for a 3-4 day weekend.More
Wedding for Oldest Daughter, 39 family and friends.
Oldest daughter gets married on the beach. 39 friends and family members all at one resort. Location is great. They take care of everything. Girls got to have a Spa day to get ready. The Groom and his guys had an experience just for them as well. Lot's of pools and things to do. Many restaurants to eat at the resort. Want to thank, Jeffery for making the workouts fun for all. The beach work out challenge was awesome. Had a great time being the only person aged 50 to compete. Courtney , who greets you as you step off the bus in amazing. He remembers you immediately, checks on you constantly as you walk thru the lobby. Takes care of your luggage and anything else you could need. Peter at the pool bar is really nice. Makes a great rum punch. Activities by the pool everyday. The entertainment crew works hard to get every involved. We had a great time. Beach wedding, reception on the beach, bonfire on the beach after the reception. Alcohol is served at the pool until 5:30pm then you move to the sports bar. Which was great for the 5:00 wedding we had. Lots of families with kids. Adult pool, family pool and a separate kids pool. Lazy river and slides for kids and adults.More
