With a beachfront setting, huge pool and serene spa, the Blau Varadero has tropical retreat written all over it.
Varadero’s white-sand beach underlines this high-rise hotel – the wooden walkway that leads through the grounds will take you to it. The waterside setting means the hotel gets fantastic sea views, too.
Tropical gardens hide a massive pool and a chic spa, while on the dining front you’ve got a triple helping of restaurants to pick between.

The Good Bad And Ugly
Spent two weeks here end of May first week June, the weather was great, only had one day of rain and that was the Thursday that we were flying home. The hotel building it self is quite ugly looking out side, but inside it was very open and spacious, a lot of vines growing from the top floor balconies to reception and lower bar areas. Check in was quiet good, was given a pool towel card which you must return at the end of your holiday, the towels can be obtained from the pool area its the animation hut, went straight up to room, had emailed the hotel before hand to ask for a room on the 9th floor and was given just that, very large room with of plenty of storage space a free safe fridge but no kettle just a coffee percolator, so if you like a cup of tea in the morning I would advise to take a travel kettle, bath room very good size, a bath with shower attachment, shower very good pressure always had hot water, a massive bed, TV with some English channels , small table and lovely wicker high back chairs to relax in, the balcony has two reclining loungers and table, also a clothes airer, everything was very clean and in good order. There is only two lifts for the entire hotel, this can be very frustrating when the lifts stop a every floor, also very hot inside. The food was quit good, it would take me a long time to list the wide choices that you had, breakfast very good Lunch at the pool excellent, dinner in the main restaurant again a great choice, a fish station, a meat station, a pasta station, breads fruits cakes excellent. We used the a la carte, the best one was the international one we found the Mexican restaurant had no atmosphere and was very stuffy,Now the beach absolutely stunning you can walk for miles clear water and white fine sand, never had a problem getting a sun lounger, but you will always get them certain people that reserve them and just go out for the morning and come back lunch time, and I'm sorry to say it was mostly the English.Beach bar was well run never had to wait for drinks once that new what you were drinking they had them on the bar ready for you, had lunch there a few times burgers, fish, pizzas, and toasted sandwiches all cooked to order. Did not use the pool much as we are beach people, but again plenty of sun beds, pools not deep, easy access in to water, lovely temperature, always something going on around the pool, again did not have to wait long to obtain drinks. The only thing about this hotel it is lacking air con in public areas, the lobby bar and the main restaurant at meal times it did get unbearable some time. The staff at this hotel are unbelievable attentive always polite and courteous, from the grounds men to the reception staff always helpful, they make this hotel work so well.I would recommend this hotel too my family and friends, if you want a adult only relaxing place to unwind this is the place for you, if you want to get involved in all the activities they have to offer you again this is the place to stay. The Good the people food and beach. The Bad more air con in public areas. The Ugly the out side of the hotel. Get to stay in this hotel before the Americans start spoiling it, they were treating the staff appallingly,More
Great hotel, exceeded expectations
Nuce food, plenty of choice, plenty of entertainment, plenty of activities, nice beachside bar, gym, great rooms and good service - all included in the price! So close to the beach as well. We particularly enjoyed sitting in the excellent lobby bar in the evenings due to the great atmosphere. Recommended. More
Great in Cuba
I must say Cuba standards are probably not the standards we're used to in the UK however I really enjoyed my 11 night stay in the Blau. Rooms both sides of the hotel have a sea view with a spacious balcony, the rooms are cleaned everyday and again spacious. The bathroom had a shower over the bath and was clean with lovely toiletries. The all inclusive is 24 hours a day so we had toasties at 3am because we could, the buffet breakfast lunch and dinner has lots to choose from, lunch was served in the pool bar and others in the main restaurant, lunch time provided a BBQ by the pool too and in the evening a pizza and pasta corner to make own which was great. We were standard all inclusive so had two visits to the Mexican restaurant which we enjoyed and one visit to the international which was beautiful setting food and service. Drinks all included however served in tiny cups so I would suggest to take your own!!! The hotel is on a fabulous part of Varadero beach and the loungers were free to use. As part of the inclusive we used the kayaks sailing and pedalos which were fun. Entertainment in the evening was typical all inclusive really magic dancing etc but good fun. WIFI is a slight issue, £2 per hour and that's if you can even connect as my Samsung wouldn't and my boyfriends IPhone wouldn't either. From the hotel you can walk along the beach to the end of the peninsula and to some caves which was a nice walk. I would say this is a good 4* hotel for Cuba. Had a really lovely stay and enjoyed seeing Cuba thank you!!! More
Now Adults Only
Not too far from Varadero airport (about 40-45 min), so easy transfer. First impressions very good, easy check in, helpful staff, but very hot and stuffy - yes I know I was going to a hot country, but I was expecting air conditioning inside the hotel. As the hotel has a very open plan layout (it's a bit like outside, inside) the only air conditioning is in the main restaurant and in your room. When sitting at the inside bar we tried to sit at a table near or in the line of the paths outside trying to catch a breeze, that said we didn't find it too uncomfortable and seemed to adjust to the climate pretty easily. Our room was big enough for the 3 of us not to be on top of each other and the air conditioning worked very well, so much so one of our party complained of being cold! Room was serviced daily and we always had enough towels and our mini bar topped up. Food choice in the buffet restaurants was plentiful, if sometimes strange combinations, always lots of fish which suited me :-) also very happy with the lunch grill option by the pool, everything was cooked fresh - so be prepared to wait to have it cooked properly. We visited the International restaurant once (as that is all we could book for) the service and food was exceptional. Pool is divided in two, the end nearest the hotel is used for volleyball, aqua zumba etc. There are notices up asking guests not to use inflatables etc in the pool (although the shop sells them) and as the hotel is adults only everyone adhered to this - while we were there. I suppose you can always take them to the beach which is only a minutes walk and has it's own bar and snacks available. All the staff we had dealings with were happy, polite, friendly, efficient; nothing was a problem. In particular our breakfast waiters (I think one was called Eduardo) and one of the bar waiters were absolutely brilliant and always remembered our drink preferences. We did tip, not always and not much, but we did seek them out on our last day to give an extra tip and our chambermaid every other day. I would recommend this hotel, we probably wont go back as we tend to go to a new place each time, but if I was going back I would very much look forward to it.More
Definitely Marmite This review Will probably be one of the most divisive I have ever compiled for Trip Advisor. It is not my intention to antagonise either viewpoints but just to give an honest review of this hotel namely Blau Varadero. This hotel was a recommendation from work colleagues who visited some years back with rave reviews. From the offset I can guarantee your views will fall into one of two camps, either you are a smoker who enjoys the freedom of being able to smoke wherever you like without concern or consideration for others. Or you all fall into the second camp, which is where I sit, where I expect something better with some sort of guidelines, some sort of consideration for my fellow travellers. Upon arrival the Blau looks impressive from the exterior, the entrance is wide and spacious it is also totally NOT air conditioned. The overwhelming first opinion of ours was ‘what in heaven's name are all those plants hanging down from internal balconies, making the place look somewhat shabby and from a low budget, down market jungle movie’. Travelling to our room via the partly glassed lift affording a view over the centre area of the hotel which was quite pleasant though. The room itself on the other hand left something to be desired, to say it was basic would be an understatement. We booked a deluxe ocean view room with a balcony, there was nothing deluxe about this room and it certainly looked nothing like the brochure pictures at all. It was furnished with old brown wooden furniture, the wicker chairs were filthy, two holes had been punched into the bathroom door and not repaired, the window net curtain still had dead insects and blood on them from previous residents, (I don’t think the blood was from the previous residents but from previously killed insects!) the bidet was not fixed to the floor and the room had it’s own distinct aroma, that just would not go away, not nice at all. Unfortunately I had interpreted four stars that have been awarded to this hotel as being well, four stars. Let me point out at this early juncture that four stars in the United Kingdom are totally different to the four stars I found in Cuba, that in itself is not a criticism it is very difficult to review the property where all the staff involved seem to be doing the best they can under the circumstances of where they are situated and it is only with hindsight that I feel this review might be somewhat over critical. The staff were indeed friendly, helpful, polite and everything else that we would expect, they were not to be the problem. In particular what I found was the allowability (if that's word) of smokers to smoke wherever they wanted, by the pool, by the bar, in reception, in their rooms, and everywhere else with the exception of the restaurants. Any areas that were marked as non-smoking either in the piano bar or alongside the main internal bar down by the bushes were not kept as non-smoking. This is where I put the responsibility at the feet of inconsiderate smokers of varying nationalities. In the bar areas, the wicker furniture throughout the hotel was filthy. Yes filthy, the cushions are dirty and stained, the armrests and backs of the seating are dirty and tacky to the touch and probably haven’t been cleaned since placed in situ. As the bar areas are open plan, there are birds flying around, landing on the tables, chairs and bar area, waiting for scraps of food to eat “Do Not eat the nuts or biscuits from the bar”. The birds are that used to being there, they even lift up the serviette covering the coffee biscuits and no one stops them. When I started this review I pointed out that there was no air conditioning upon arrival in reception, allow me to elaborate on that even more, with the exception of your room and the buffet restaurant there is ZERO air conditioning on the hotel grounds. When the temperature is up in the 30’s a certain amount of respite is appreciated however if the only respite available is to go into one's own room and stay there with balcony doors shut it is hardly conducive with a good holiday. An area where smoking was not allowed and had some gentle air conditioning within the hotel would go some way to alleviate some of these issues. Again I have to come back to something I said earlier which is, they are doing the best they can with what they have. The quality of the food at the main evening meal (and I only used buffet, I did not use the à la carte restaurants) was basic to say the least, it was never that basic that there was nothing to eat but as an all-inclusive environment, I would have expected something much better, and preferably without the flies. One of the issues in my reviews in hotels everywhere is the shower environment, this hotel actually has a rather good shower set up, there was plenty of hot water with plenty of pressure and most importantly in my view the shower itself had a flexible hose with attached showerhead so one is able to wash properly their nether regions (you know exactly what I mean). Going back to the food I would point out that the pool bar food area which is a bit like an outdoor restaurant in actual fact produced some really good food for lunchtime, considerably better than it's big sister restaurant inside the hotel. There appears to be no shortage of beer and other alcoholic drinks available, there was certainly enough soft drink for anybody who fancied them at the hotel. Maybe when built a few years ago (I don't know the exact date) the building would have been far superior, the truth is it now needs some serious TLC, a good deep clean and a full re-vamp. The beach area associated with the hotel although it is a public beach is in fairly good condition with the sand gently shelving itself into the sea remaining shallow for quite some distance so is ideal for gentle paddling. There are watersports available from the beach, canoes, pedalos and windsurf boards. I am led to believe they are included in the cost of the holiday although cannot confirm this. If you have already booked this resort and are now reading this review, unless you are a smoker who does not require air conditioning but likes to drink beer in a not so very clean environment, eating not the greatest food in the world, then this is for you. If on the other hand, if you are not a person like that, with the exception that you have already booked the hotel may I suggest a good-quality sunscreen, a good quality fan and some seriously thick skin to put up with the inconsiderate smokers you will encounter. This hotel has so much potential, and has some seriously nice and helpful staff. This hotel is seriously lacking some love and finance, would I ever return to this hotel? Definitely not. Will I ever return to Cuba? Again unfortunately I would suggest definitely not. If you decide to go to downtown Varadero during your stay, there are plenty of ways to do it, all of which are quite fun, from little train type vehicle that leaves around 9:30 and every hour afterwards, then there is a conventional taxi or public transport buses. There is even the 1950s fifties American cars you can hire. You might be somewhat disappointed as we were, it's not Oxford Street, it's not Rodeo Drive, it’s a single main street, through a very poor and deprived area. The locals, friendly people with no real hassle, sell handmade goods and some are pretty nice pieces. Please bear in mind however there is still no air conditioning downtown so wear a big hat drink plenty of water use plenty of sunscreen, and finally remember that both day and night the mosquitoes can be vicious little so-and-so’s. If you are a smoker, please show some consideration for your fellow travellers. It is your choice to smoke, passive smoking is not our choice. Not only does the act of and the smoker smell, smoking related diseases effect smokers on a daily basis, what it doesn’t effect is your ability to read and adhere to simple instruction showing common courtesy to others within the environment. Where you decide to light up, we don’t really care if you die early of a smoking related disease, slowly and painfully, what we do care about is, you Mr and Mrs Smelly spoiling our well earned holiday.More
