Holidays to Amadores on Gran Canaria serve up a half-kilometre of Blue Flag beach, and plenty of rest and relaxation. You’ve also got livelier Puerto Rico just next door, and Las Palmas an easy day trip away too.
Set on Gran Canaria’s south coast, Amadores is a relatively new arrival on the resort front. It hasn’t let its status as holiday getaway go to its head, though. What you’ve got here is a quiet spot with a clutch of waterfront restaurants and a laid-back beach. If you want anything livelier, neighbouring Puerto Rico can always pick up the pace.
Blue Flag beach
The beach at Amadores is a half-kilometre sweep in a horseshoe-shaped bay. The nice people here went to the trouble of shipping in the sand from the Caribbean – though it’s a little bit crunchy underfoot. Water wise, the sea is very paddle-friendly. And you’re all set up for sunloungers, umbrellas and prom-side restaurants.
If you like top coastal views without having strap on your hiking boots, Amadores can help you out. A clifftop path runs all the way from the resort to Puerto Rico, about a kilometre away. It shouldn’t take you longer than half an hour, even at a really leisurely pace.
Day trips to Las Palmas
An hour’s drive north of Amadores gets you to the island’s capital, Las Palmas. The old town comes with a couple of museums and a cathedral – the views from its towers are well worth the climb. Back on the streets, you’ve got high-end boutiques on the main Calle Mesa Y Lopez. And there are plenty of pavement cafés and tapas bars for rest stops.
