Holidays to Bahia Maimon are all about the beach – one of the world’s 10 best. You’ve also got Puerto Plata, the Dominican Republic’s capital, less than half an hour away.
Back in 1496, Christopher Columbus reckoned Bahia Maimon was the most beautiful place he’d ever seen. Set on the Dominican Republic’s north coast, this place has been turning heads ever since. This is real all-inclusive territory here, so you’ve just got a clutch of hotels, a mountain vista – and one seriously idyllic beach.
Condé Nast has ranked Bahia Maimon’s beach among the world’s top 10, thanks to its powdery golden sand and blazing blue shallows. It’s flanked by a handful of hotels and beachfront restaurants slotted in among the palm trees. Watersports wise, you’ve got laid-back options like kayaks and pedalos, and the clear water is great for snorkelling.
Easy day trips
Less than half an hour and you can be in the island’s capital, Puerto Plata. Here you’ve got the San Felipe fort, an amber museum and a rum distillery to take in. And from the town centre a cable car takes you 800 metres up to the peak of Mount Isabel de Torres – along with the first-rate view, there’s a big statue of Christ and a rainforest-style botanical garden at the top.
