A Cretan biggie
As resorts go, Hersonissos is a big shot. Set on the north coast of Crete, this modern town goes in all guns blazing when it comes to pleasing the holiday crowd. It’s covered off families with a duo of waterparks, ramped up the nightlife for party animals – and it’s only gone and thrown in 3 beaches as well.
Triple beach action
Hersonissos really doesn’t hang about on the beach front. You’ve got a trio of main stretches plus a string of small coves – and all within walking distance of the resort. From banana boats to bungee jumping, it packs in the watersports, too. And if you want to throw caution – and your clothes – to the wind, there’s a naturist area to the west here.
After dark, Hersonissos doesn’t quieten down. In fact, it’s one of the liveliest resorts on the island. The waterfront sees a lot of the action, with back-to back bars and clubs that come with big DJs and even bigger beats. And away from the beach, the streets are aloud with the sound of karaoke and cheesy pop.
Day trips to Rethymnon
If you’re out and about for the day, you can be in Rethymnon in less than 90 minutes. Behind the walls of the old fortress it’s all domed mosques and minarets, while the streets are lined with boutiques and the Venetian-style harbour is ringed with restaurants. Or closer to home, the pretty villages of Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and Ano Hersonissos are just 2 kilometres away.
