Holidays to Icmeler take you to one of Turkey’s most popular resorts – with great beaches, first-rate mountain views and plenty of diving and day trips.
Backed by a dramatic mountain range on Turkey’s southwest coast, Icmeler is a purpose-built resort with a difference. Just a 15-minute drive from much bigger and louder Marmaris, this place has kept in touch with its traditional fishing village roots while nabbing itself some great restaurants. It’s also got one of the best beaches in these parts.
Life on the beach
Stretching the length of the bay, the wide sand and shingle beach is definitely the main event round here. There’s loads of space so even at peak times you can still get a sunbed, and the clear, calm and shallow waters are great for families. The beach is lined with eucalyptus and palm trees and there are plenty of beachside bars and shops to dip into.
Walks of all sorts
Thanks to a stunning hillside overlooking the Med, Icmeler is a top spot for walkers. You can go for an early morning walk in the hills, or take an evening stroll across the headland. Whatever you fancy, you get to enjoy the pine-clad hills, lush jasmine and eucalyptus trees at your own pace. Back in town, you can explore the architecture in the old winding streets, or go for a sunset stroll along the promenade to Marmaris.
The eye-catching landscape isn’t just on dry land – the underwater scenery is just as impressive, with steep drops and massive boulders hiding plenty of treats for divers. Look out for octopus and scorpion fish in among the rocks on the ocean floor in the bay. Diving boats leave from the main beach.
Easy day trips
Nearby Marmaris sets you up for a packed day out, with a cobbled old town, mosques and castle to dip into. The town’s yacht-magnet of a marina is a great spot for lunch and people-spotting. And if you’re an early riser you can even take a high-speed catamaran from here to the Greek island of Rhodes. In Rhodes Town you’ve got another nice old town as well as lots of Roman ruins to explore. Don’t forget to pack your passport for this one.
