A party resort
Kardamena used to be a fishing village but just look at it now. Set on the southeast coast of Kos, the mid-sized resort has turned into one of the island’s liveliest holiday destinations. The place plays up to the Brit pack – and the karaoke and clubs keep pulling in the crowds.
Kardamena has more than 100 bars, clubs and discos. Most of the action fires up in the aptly named Bar Street, though the main square isn’t short on fun either. You’ve got it all here – cocktails, karaoke, quizzes – while dance tracks take you from garage and indie right through to cheesy pop.
During the day, the beach takes over things. You’ve got a 3-kilometre sandy strip here backed up with bars and eateries. The place can get quite crowded but you only have to walk a little way from the centre to find a quieter spot. Meanwhile, watersports put in a good appearance – you’ve got everything from pedalos and banana boats to jet-skiing and parasailing.
Easy day trips
Just 40 minutes’ drive and you’re in Kos Town, with its Medieval castle and ancient city walls. You’ve got a stack of shops to get round, too. Or you can take a boat to the island of Nisyros, about an hour away. Here you’ve got an active volcano – the bus ride up is all hairpin bends but you’ll be rewarded with a walk around the smoking crater.
