With the Middle East on one side and Africa on the other, there’s an air of Arabian nights’ romance about Taba Town. This north Egyptian border town is backed by the red Sinai Mountains, lined by the blue waters of the Gulf of Aqaba and shadowed by the desert landscapes of nearby Jordan. And the Bedouin vibe doesn’t give way to rows of Brit bars either, because all the nightlife action is taken care of by the hotels.

Kilometres of coastline

The 70-kilometre coastline from Taba Town to Nuweiba is one of the best stretches of the Red Sea, with bays, coves, lagoons and an island all on its patch. And the golden sand and shimmering waters are just the start – the marine life round these parts makes snorkelling and diving a must-do. When you’re not underwater, you’ve got a raft of watersports with wakeboarding, waterskiing, parasailing and windsurfing. And there are plenty of sunloungers to dry off on afterwards.

Easy day trips

A 30-minute ferry ride from Taba Town will get you to the island of Pharaoh. The coral reef round here pulls in the divers, and on land you’ve got an impressive 12th-century fortress to see. For a different perspective on the area, you can hire a quad bike to get you up close and personal with the desert and canyons of the Sinai Mountains. You can sign up for a 1-hour ride or do a half-day, which usually includes a stop-off at a Bedouin tent for tea.
