The zest of the Bahian people is reflected in its delight of everything culinary. With strong African influences, most dishes feature coconut milk, spicy pepper and palm oil. Local specialities include Moqueca, a delicious spicy seafood stew, and Xinxim de Galinha, chicken stew often prepared with garlic, shrimps and pumpkin. For a street snack, try Acaraje, bean fritters, sometimes with shrimp, fried in palm oil. Wash dishes down with a Caipirinha, the national cocktail, made from limes, sugar and Cachaça, a high proof sugar cane spirit.
For the ultimate carnival atmosphere, head to the cobbled streets of Pelourinho in Salvador, with its live percussion music, folklore shows, bars and nightclubs. In Costa de Sauípe you'll find a wide selection of bars and restaurants, while in Praia do Forte you can dine with views of the idyllic landscape, along Alameda do Sol.
Browse the colourful stalls at Salvador's market, Mercado Modelo, which sells local handicrafts, musical instruments, hammocks, silver and leather. Salvador's leading mall, Iguatemi has a range of fashion stores and a multiplex cinema. You can buy handmade jewellery, carvings and paintings along the esplanade in Praia do Forte.
