A trading post for centuries, and still a busy port, Mombasa’s historical old town is all narrow streets, wooden balconies, mosques and minarets. The area’s crammed with little shops selling antique jewellery, bright khanga cottons and beautiful wood carvings. And overseeing it all is the 16th-century Fort Jesus and an Anglican cathedral harking back to the colonial days. Beyond the old quarter, modern Mombasa is marked by the famous twin ‘tusks’ and focuses on Moi Avenue’s shops and the Mwembe Tayari market area. Plus, you’ve got European, Asian and Swahili restaurants, along with bags of seafood dishes and tropical fruits. Elsewhere, the city’s main stretches of beach are set in front of the All Inclusive resorts, so you’ll be in a prime spot to enjoy them. We’re talking powdery white sands and turquoise waters that give the Caribbean a run for its money. There’s plenty of watersports, too, if you fancy it.
