Get into the party spirit all year round...
With the holidays just around the corner, we’re all getting into the party mood. But why only treat ourselves to a knees-up in December? Here’s the rundown of places pumping up the volume over the coming months – perfect if your Latin spirit’s going loco…
Sequins. Feathers. Fireworks. It could only be one thing – the Tenerife carnival. It all takes place in Santa Cruz and lasts for a whole week in February. And it’s a grand affair – in fact, it’s Europe’s biggest carnival. The climax is the Shrove Tuesday parade with a kaleidoscope of costumes and floats weaving their way through the streets.
Where to stay: H10 Tenerife Playa, Puerto De La Cruz or the Bahia Principe San Felipe, Puerto De La Cruz
When the great parties of the world were dished out, the Dominican Republic came up trumps. Its carnival lasts for the entire month of February! Head for the streets of La Vega and Santo Domingo for the best parades – and look out for the fearsome ‘diablo’ devil masks.
Where to stay: Gran Bahia Principe, La Romana
Going to the Costa Blanca in March? Then head up to Valencia for Las Fallas. Hundreds of giant papier-mâché statues, some over 30 feet high, are paraded through the streets. At the end of the celebrations, they’re tossed on to giant bonfires which gives you the impression the whole city’s on fire. A fabulous fireworks display adds to the noise and colour of this barmy but totally unmissable festival.
Where to stay: Regente, Benidorm
Music, conga lines, fancy outfits, fireworks, boogying, booze and shed-loads of fun. It could only really be the Havana Carnival, Cuba, held every August. Parades run the length of the Malécon, with a mix of traditional and contemporary music cranking up the decibels. It’s also the prefect opportunity to try the island's tipples – Havana Club Rum and ice-cold beer.
Where to stay: Iberostar Laguna Azul or Tryp Peninsula, Varadero
Fancy yourself as a bit of a Jilly Goolden or an Oz Clark? Then head off to Binissalem in the heart of Majorca’s wine-growing region. Dedicated to all things vinous, September’s Vermada Fiesta includes wine-tasting and grape-crushing. Look out for a pied piper who leads the villagers down to the vineyards for a grape-pelting free-for-all.
Where to stay: Lagotel Hotel, Alcudia
