If you’ve been bitten by the wildlife bug, a holiday is the perfect way to unleash your inner David Attenborough. From spying on elephants in Kenya to whale watching in the Dominican Republic, the natural world gives you a raft of holiday experiences.
Kenya. It’s the original safari destination, and it still packs a punch when it comes to spotting the biggest creatures in the animal kingdom. Elephants, lions, buffalos, rhinos and leopards – they’re the Big Five, and you’ll find them all here. Head out on a two night trip on the Tsavo Safari, or go the whole hog and don the safari linens for seven nights on the Tanzania Safari. But if you’d rather sit back and watch from a distance, pick the right hotel and there’s a high chance you’ll cross quite a few off your list while sipping a cocktail.
Where to stay?
You can combine a stay at any of our Kenyan hotels with a safari - one of our favourites is the Baobab Beach Resort, it’s got the best location on Diani's stunning beach.
Each year during May to August hordes of green and loggerhead turtles flock to Cyprus' northern shores to lay their eggs. And roughly 50 days later they hatch. Both species are endangered, so to give them a helping hand the Marine Turtle Research Group has a conservation team to oversee things. The group's base is at Alagadi beach, about 15 kilometres east of Kyrenia. And it's here where you can see tiny turtle hatchlings crack free from their eggs and scuttle off towards the sea. It's possibly the cutest wildlife-watching ever.
Where to stay?
Latchi is a good bet - it's an easy-going fishing town not too far from all the turtle action at Alagadi beach. And, if you fancy checking out some turtles on your doorstep, then head for the Lara Bay Turtle Sanctuary. You can even volunteer to help out.
For a peek into the underwater world of Nemo and co, the Red Sea is perfect. It’s packed with over a thousand species, with weird and wonderful names like triggerfish, sabre squirrelfish and masked butterfly fish. What’s more, a staggering 10% of these finned beauties are unique to the Red Sea. Much of this is down to the 2000 kilometres of coral reef that’s been here for several thousands of years. One of the best spots is the Blue Hole, an underground cave, a few kilometres from Dahab. It’s about 130 metres deep and is a reef fish magnet.

The Radisson SAS Resort makes a great base for scuba stays and it even has its own diving school.
For one of the most incredible wildlife-watching experiences there is, the Dominican Republic comes up trumps. Each year from January to March more than 10,000 Humpback whales descend on these tropical waters for one major speed-dating session. One of the best places to see them is the Samana region. Plenty of regular boat trips leave from this spot, so to make sure you don’t miss any of them check into a hotel nearby.
Where to stay?
Check in to the Gran Bahia Principe Cayacoa hotel in Samana and you’ll be close to all the loved-up action. P.S. All our hotels in Samana will be bookable from next winter – so make sure you look out for our winter 2010/11 far flung holidays going on sale in November!
