We caught up with waterpark guru Tommy Lynch to find out why he’s got the best job in the world…
When the media got wind of what Tommy Lynch does for a living they had a field day. The Sun, the Mirror, the Daily Express and even the Daily Telegraph printed pictures of him, clipboard in hand, hurtling down water chutes around the globe. Headlines declared him 'the man with the best job in the world'. And they had a point. After all, testing waterslides for a living isn't your average day job. But for the First Choice manager, it's par for the course.
Back at First Choice HQ - and fully clothed - Tommy says as fun as his job is, there’s a serious quest behind completing questionnaires on waterslides. It’s all to do with Splash, a new range of hotels from First Choice. These family-friendly properties come with the added extra of a waterpark, carefully selected by the flume king himself.
“For kids on holiday, the pool is the most important thing,” Tommy explains. “And so Splash Hotels have re-invented the holiday swimming pool. All the hotels have been picked because they’ve got some great stuff going on.”
That ‘great stuff’ includes waterslides – everything from the simple and gentle to the bizarre and the downright scary – as well as lazy rivers, pirate ships, water jets, wave pools, climbing nets and a whole load of other fun ways to get wet.
“Each one’s got something for all the family, from toddler pools to big water slides for older kids,” Tommy says. “Aqua Fantasy in Turkey is perhaps the most impressive. Guests staying at his hotel get to use the waterpark next-door for free.”
Tommy’s a big fan of this particular one, not least because of the ominously titled Kamikaze. He does have a word of advice though before riding this dare-devil slide. “Hold onto your swimming shorts when you land in the splash pool to avoid emerging with a red face!”
