Cocktails are an essential part of any holiday. What could be better than relaxing on the beach with a Mojito or Strawberry Daiquiri in hand? In honour of this poolside staple, we’re bringing you a cocktail recipe every month. This month, it’s a Costa Rican classic, the guaro sour cocktail…

Costa Rica is well-known David Attenborough territory, thanks to the acres of thick jungle you can explore and the rare plant and animal species you can spot. On a visit to the Central American country, you can trek through the rainforest and stay overnight in a treehouse, clamber across the famous hanging bridges in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, and see tiny hummingbirds, glass frogs and sleeping sloths.

Of course, after all that adventuring, you’ll need a tipple to toast your amazing day. Enter the traditional guaro sour cocktail, which despite its name, is a sweet and refreshing drink. It’s made with Guaro Cacique, which is Costa Rica’s official spirit, and plenty of herbs, in a nod to the rainforest-rich country.

Guaro sour cocktails are really common in Costa Rica, so ask your hotel bartender to make up this tasty drink for you to try – they might even have their own spin on the famous recipe. Or, pick up a bottle of Guaro Cacique as a souvenir, and try making one at home.

Here’s our step-by-step guide to making a guaro sour cocktail at home…

    Ingredients

    Makes one cocktail

    • 2 basil leaves
    • 7 coriander leaves
    • handful of ice-cubes
    • 1 ½ measures Guaro Cacique liquor
    • 1 lime
    • 1 measure brown sugar syrup
    • soda water
    • salt

    The step-by-step method

Tear up the basil and coriander leaves and put them in the shaker.

Add some of the Guaro Cacique – but don’t go too crazy, it’s a potent liqueur.

Squeeze in the juice of a lime and the brown sugar syrup.

    Muddle everything together and shake.

Salt the rim of a tumble and pour the mixture into the glass.

Top up with soda water and add a wedge of lime.

    Did you know?

Pura vida – which translates to pure life – is the Costa Rican way of saying ‘cheers’.
