April is the official month of rain showers in the UK – along with, let’s be honest, pretty much the rest of the year. It just happens to be a great time to travel outside of the UK though, with summer season just kicking off in Southern Europe and some sweltering Caribbean destinations to travel to. So, whether you’re after sizzling temperatures or just some warm sunshine, here’s our pick of the best places to travel to in April…

    Aruba

Average temperature in Aruba in April: 28°C
High temperature in Aruba in April: 30°C

Aruba boasts toasty temperatures all year round, but April is particularly high and dry – with gentle trade winds keeping you cool when you’re out and about. And this, coupled with the Caribbean island’s 70 kilometres of sandy coastline, makes it a front-runner for a springtime holiday.

The Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusive on Druif Beach is literally footsteps from the sand, and you can watch the sunset from a sea-view pool here. It’s also near Oranjested, Aruba’s capital city, where you can take a day trip to Renaissance Island and swim with flamingos (yes, really). Find out everything you need to know about the pink beach-loving birds here.

The Dutch-influenced island also celebrates its ties to the Netherlands with a Caribbean-eqsue King’s Day celebration in April. April 27th is a bank holiday for locals and you’ll find street fairs, kite flying contests and family-friendly parades and activities across the island. In Oranjestad, many of the restaurants offer special King’s Day menus, and there are colonial landmarks, quaint gingerbread-style houses and an ancient port to see too.

    Thailand

Average temperature in Thailand in April: 29°C
High temperature in Thailand in April: 33°C

You can swap April showers for one of the biggest water fights in the world if you pick Thailand as your destination of choice. Every year from the 12th to the 15th of April locals and tourists come together to celebrate Thai New Year, also known as Songkran, and soak each other with water pistols and water balloons. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before, and of course, the perfect way to cool down in the heat.

Pick Phuket as your base to join in the Songkran fun, and you’ll enjoy huge strips of white sand along its coastline, plus a lively town full of restaurants and bars. You’ll also be able to travel to the stunning UNESCO-protected Similan Islands from here, which are only open to the public from November to the end of April. When it comes to hotels, the Arinara Bangtao Beach Resort from our SuneoClub collection is budget-friendly with one of the longest beaches in Phuket on its doorstep.

    Italy

Average temperature in Italy in April: 15°C
High temperature in Italy in April: 21°C

Italy isn’t just about pasta and pizza (although we think that’s enough reason to visit), it also has a record number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites – 51 to be exact. These include famous landmarks like the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Colosseum, ancient towns like Pompeii, and plenty of natural wonders like Mount Etna in Sicily and the rolling hills of the Val d’Orcia region in Tuscany. And, if you want to explore them before the crowds kick in and the temperature gets too hot, April is the perfect time to go. Stay at the newly-refurbished Hotel Parco Del Sole in Sorrento, and you might just have the nearby Amalfi Coast all to yourself.

Easter is also one of the biggest celebrations in Italy, so if it falls in April you can expect parades, celebrations and impressive chocolate egg displays across the country. You might be able to catch one of the biggest Easter mass services in St. Peter’s Basilica in the middle of the Vatican City too.

    Morocco

Average temperature in Morocco in April: 25°C
High temperature in Morocco in April: 29°C

Morocco basks in mid-twenties temperatures in April – perfect for exploring the souks and spice markets of Marrakech, or sunning yourself on the African country’s impressive beaches. Agadir, on Morocco’s south coast, boasts 300 days of sunshine a year and nine kilometres of powder-soft sand for you to relax on. Stay at the newly-refurbished, adults-only Hotel Riu Tikida Beach to make the most of the beach and its luxurious four-poster cabanas. As well as its seafront location, this place lines up a bumper selection of activities including Moroccan cooking classes, beach volleyball and even Arabic lessons.

While the temperatures are nice and warm in April, it’s not too hot for some city exploring in Marrakech. And, there’s plenty to see in the Red City including a maze of souks stacked with spices, and the famous Jemaa el-Fna square that comes to life in the evenings with acrobats, street performers and snake charmers.  The peaceful Riu Tikida Garden is the ideal hotel, located just outside of the bustle of Marrakech’s city centre. This traditional-looking, terracotta resort boasts a huge pool, three bars to choose from and a packed schedule of sports and activities including minigolf, badminton and cycling.

    Lanzarote

Average temperature in Lanzarote in April: 21°C
High temperature in Lanzarote in April: 25°C

All of the Canary Islands make a great destination choice in spring, but Lanzarote usually pips the post temperature-wise in April. The island is fairly flat, so you won’t get much difference in temperatures from North to South, and you’ll also enjoy a mega 13 hours of sunshine per day. It’s warm enough for spending time on the 30 kilometres of sandy coastline, and cool enough for exploring the natural sights like the Timanfaya National Park which is home to a hundred semi-dormant volcanoes. Make a pit stop at the El Diablo restaurant here, where chefs cook food using the geothermal heat from the volcanoes. The huge Hotel Hesperia Playa Dorada has the perfect spot near sandy Playa Dorada beach. It also combines a first-class pool scene with mountain views, plus a wellness centre with saunas and hot tubs.

    Cuba

Average temperature in Cuba in April: 25°C
High temperature in Cuba in April: 30°C

April marks the start of Cuba’s hot and dry season – so you can expect toasty temperatures, fewer crowds and less humidity if you go at this time. Average temperatures are around 25°C, which is perfect for switching between the beaches of Varadero and exploring the sights of old-world Havana. Stay at the beachfront Iberostar Varadero to make the most of its sandy shores and secluded jungle surroundings. Or, pick the Royalton Hicacos which is also right by the beach and set in stunning palm-covered gardens. Water-based activities are big here, with catamaran sailing, windsurfing and water polo on the agenda, so you’ll be able to have fun while cooling down in the heat too.

You’ll be able to take a guided tour to Havana from Varadero to explore the iconic city’s old-world architecture, and the warm temperatures in April are perfect for a spot of sightseeing. On the packed trip, you’ll tick off all the famous sights including Revolution Square, the Partagas Cigar Factory and the Tropicana cabaret club, to name a few.
