Looking for an early summer escape before the school summer holidays kick in? June is arguably one of the best times to head abroad. From close-to-home European hotspots to tropical islands, here are our top picks for a sun-soaked holiday in June…

    Portugal

You don’t have to fly halfway across the globe to find the perfect sunbathing spot – the beaches in Portugal’s Algarve region are some of the best in the world. Pick this pretty region for your June escape and you’ll bask in temperatures of 28C, and have a mix of huge sandy stretches and secluded coves at your disposal. Beyond the beaches, there are also traditional villages to explore and world-famous golf courses for  sporty types. If you’re after an island escape, head to the island of Madeira which lines up tropical gardens, quirky attractions like the Ronaldo Museum, and the chance to spot whales and dolphins on a boat trip.

    Dominican Republic

Cuba’s Caribbean cousin serves up similar vibes, ancient sites and mix of green-covered mountains and dreamy beaches. It also happens to be a great option for a June holiday if you love the heat – hitting temperatures of 32C on average. Punta Cana is the most popular resort, thanks to its famous white-sand stretches, stylish hotels and proximity to Santo Domingo, where you can get your culture fix. In between topping up your tan and taking a dip in the turquoise waters, you can get stuck into exciting activities like Terracross buggy rides through the jungle, zip-lining over a rainforest canopy and whizzing James Bond-style along the Arena Gorda coastline in a speedboat.

    Italy

If you’re after a culture-packed escape, Italy offers up so much to see across its mainland, and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. In fact, it currently holds the record for the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in one country, so you’ll get the chance to tick landmarks like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountains off your bucket list. Head to Sorrento before peak holiday season, and you’ll be within daytripping distance of both the Amalfi Coast and the centuries-old, lava-covered city of Pompeii. The 26C temperature at this time of year is perfect for regular Aperol Spritz people-watching stops at the local cafes, and boat trips along the coastline. And you can even hop over to celeb-fave Capri to yacht spot, rub shoulders with the rich and famous, and explore some gorgeous beaches.

This classic British holiday hotspot is popular for good reason. It’s just a two-and-a-half-hour flight from the UK, with quick and easy transfers to the main resorts, and you’ve got a mix of quaint towns and big beach resorts to choose from. Head to Palma to get your history fix, with a huge Gothic cathedral, snaking cobbled lanes and loads of museums to explore. Or, pick Magaluf as your base to be within touching distance of an amazing stretch of sand. If you’re travelling with the kids in tow, the Sol Katmandu Park & Resort is a great option for family fun. This quirky, themed hotel gives you free access to the onsite theme park which is packed full of 4D and interactive rides, plus a huge splash park and immense soft play area. You basically won’t see the kids for the entire holiday…
