Very good staff and a very comfortable hotel. Very generous breakfasts and good all round facilities. Lovely pool and plenty of sun beds. The Beach is a long 5 minute walk but is absolutely stunning. Very quiet at night.
Sun, sand & quiet

Excellent six days in a quiet, high quality hotel with miles of quiet, clean beach just a 10 minute walk down an unsurfaced track. Sea fresh and lovely for swimming. Weather glorious for 5 out of 6 days. One night & day with cloud and some rain which the island needs. One evening of island power-cuts was interesting, but the hotel has a generator. The staff were helpful, very pleasant but unobtrusive. Our room was large, overlooked the pool - which made a relaxing sound of running water until you closed the balcony door. The WiFi enabled us to keep in touch with home. The included breakfast was good with excellent choice. As it was out of season, there was a limited bar food menu otherwise, so we lunched and dined at restaurants, which were generally good value but portions were large! I understand the island is much busier in summer, but the quiet and weather in November were perfect. We walked, sunbathed and swam.
Peaceful hotel with excellent staff attitude

Modern hotel , clean and spacious , small and friendly , with just the right amount of facilities. Beach close by,within 10 mins even walking slowly, not a paved road,as someone previously complained about!,but what did they expect ,it's quite walkable. Dinning room staff are amazing , always courteous, pleasant and hard working, accommodating many languages. Reception and cleaning staff are also of the same standard, nothing seems too much trouble for all the staff.A very pleasant and warm experience. Note:- At the end of the road on the beach is a small wooden bar, operated by Paula. If you want a drink , whilst getting all the unofficial tourist information on the island from a local ,she is a mine of information and the setting is perfect!
Clouds of butterflies in delightful setting.

We have just returned from Porto Santo and loved it. We rang the hotel shortly after arriving on the island at 10am but, as expected, it was too early to check in (normal check in is 3pm) so we had a wander and snack in the town. We then took a bus to the hotel arriving before midday thinking we would just sit by the pool as the hotel had indicated we could do during our earlier call. Surprise, we had been upgraded and given a villa in the beautiful gardens around the hotel! The site designers have created beautiful gardens - hibiscus hedges, rosemary, mint and other exotic flowering shrubs attracting clouds of butterflies, and nervous lizards sunbathing on the warm paved paths. There is a small gate at the far end which leads on to a dusty road down to the beach, less than 10 minutes away. And what a beach! Turning right, away from the sunbeds, is paradise - no seaweed, pebbles, just golden sand and clear water. The hotel staff were excellent. Food at the hotel was plentiful, but often disappointing - it lacked the flair of the rest of the Pestana experience which is the reason for awarding 4 stars and not 5. Meals are buffet style with a variety of choice with some flashes of brilliance - an aubergine carpaccio at dinner, Portuguese tarts at breakfast. The wine list is reasonably priced, around £15 for a decent red or white. Thank you to all at Ilha Dourada for giving us a restful holiday!
A week in Porto Santo - a detailed review!!

We have just come home from a week in Porto Santo. The first impressions were excellent, we arrived just in time for breakfast at 10:15 with plenty of choice for me as a vegetarian and gluten free. Every morning I had poached eggs on toast with gluten free bread, although unfortunately either the toast would Come out first and was then cold by the time the eggs came out, or the eggs came out and were then cold. We were told that our room would not be ready until 2pm which was not good as we’d been up since 3am and wanted to rest however, Martha the receptionist had got our villa ready for us straight after breakfast which was perfect. The villa was nothing special but perfectly fine for us although a couple of things to improve: The beds were single and pushed together so we often found ourselves falling through the gaps, why didn’t they provide double beds? The other thing to mention was that we had an issue with our shower at first which Martha (number 2) sorted out as it was difficult to adjust. It would have been good to have a bigger shower head and glass doors rather than a curtain so that the bathroom didn’t flood as we both slipped a few times on the floor. The villa also had cooking facilities and a fridge and kettle which was really handy as most hotels don’t offer these facilities as they want you to spend money at the hotel. There were also beautifully kept flowers outside all the villas and a gardener who maintained these. Air con was also good and we had a little sofa and a TV which we didn’t watch as there weren’t any channels for us but we didn’t mind this. I think the main let down for us was the weather as we knew it would be around 20 degrees however it rained a couple of times and we only had half a day of sun. If we were to come back we would try again early on in the year as we like it be hot! The other issue I faced was the food, as mentioned above breakfast was perfect but it would have been nice to have some decent juices as they tasted quite concentrated. The dinners were really awful, the pasta was yummy and the sauce and I love pasta but I don’t want to eat it every night! There was only one night that I did not have it which was when I was a bought a bowl of tomato sauce (pasta sauce) and some gluten free toast around the edge to tip into it! The starters were just a dry salad with big chunks of onion and tofu cheese which was bought out twice despite me saying I didn’t like the cheese and requested normal cheese. I was disappointed with the food and understand being veggie and gluten free is a challenge but the chef could have spoken to me about what I could eat? Even if I wasn’t gluten free, all that was on offer for veggies was pasta and rice and salad - this really needs to be improved! I had emailed way in advance to tell the hotel about my dietary requirements so this is why I was so disappointed. The staff were excellent but sometimes forgetful but this is because they were so busy all the time, it seems like there’s just not enough staff to do everything as the reception was sometimes unmanned and everyone seemed to be rushing around. Special thanks to Vanessa though who always got my breakfast order correct! As mentioned the staff were all brilliant but I think you need to employ more as they are so busy but still so polite and professional. Overall we had a good stay and would consider staying here again as a b&b option of if dinner could be improved, the island is beautiful and very relaxing and we both feel well rested. Thanks again to all the lovely staff.
