Super Hotel = Super Holiday
Stayed here at the end of November and all had a great holiday. Arrived at hotel at approx. 5:00pm and were greeted by some happy staff who offered us a cool drink. Speedy check-in and receptionist explained all we needed to know ( free safe & free Wi-Fi throughout hotel ). Asked if we needed assistance with our cases which again was a nice touch. Our room was in block 20 and on the second floor. The room and bathroom were both spacious and clean. Beds were comfortable and we had constant hot water whenever required ( I had read that this had been a problem on a previous review, but we had no issues). The room was clean on arrival and the maid kept it that way throughout the week - sheets were changed mid week & towels changed when requested. The grounds are kept immaculate and there are numerous pools about ( one nice pool just outside our block ). The pool bar overlooks the sea and supplies daytime snacks of toasties / chips and sandwiches, Beer / soft drinks & coffee on self service pumps other drinks served by pleasant bar staff. There are also numerous fridges with bottles of water throughout the hotel. There is a lovely long beach below hotel, accessed via steps ( some are a bit steep ) but later found an alternative beach access through the private villas which is easier. Found the sea to be nice and clear and to be honest warmer than some of the pools. Lovely long walks along the waters edge - there can be areas of naturists but no one seemed to mind. I think this area is re-known for having a large number of naturist holidaymakers. There is a spa ( wellbeing centre ) this is where the nudist area is located - out of sight of the rest of the hotel. It also has separate clothed & nude steam rooms / saunas & showers. Did use this area on occasions, although it was well used found it to be very quiet area with great views over the sea. The main bar at reception ( Wunderbar ) is 24hr - if you need it. Cocktails freshly made and cava readily available in ice bucket on bar. We did not spend much time here as we preferred the Plaza bar which had some entertainment. Plaza bar with seating inside & out ( it did get a bit chilly outside sometimes - so can either have a dance to warm up or return to inside of bar ) , Found bar staff to be very pleasant - they do like you to reel off your order in one go as they are very quick serving so not queuing at the bar for long periods. Found the food to be of a very good standard for mass catering. The main restaurant is very large ( but it is needed to cater for the number of guests ). There are numerous show cooking stations and the food is very tasty. In fact sometimes we felt there was too much choice. Bottles of wine on table and more available if required. We also ate at the Canarian and the Grill restaurants where the starter and main meals are served at the table - this can be a nice change from the buffet. These are booked at the main reception area - from 8:00am onwards - for the next day( we booked ours after breakfast ). To sum up - as you can tell from the title of this review - we had a great holiday and would return here in the future.More
Chilled out, perfect winter sun getaway!
Celebrated my 30th birthday here with a close friend and had an amazing time! We chose the hotel as we liked the idea that you can join in lots of activities but also be left alone and have a chilled out holiday if you wanted. The grounds and public areas were kept really clean and tidy, we never struggled to get drinks, seated at a table for food or find a sun lounger. We found the whole place to be really chilled and quiet! If you do want music during the day you can sit near the activity pool were the entertainment team kept you busy but we were happier away from the music. We used the fitness classes and gym a couple of times and really liked the fact there were plenty of fitness options. Hotel room was lovely, spacious and clean, yes no tea/coffee facilities but because the restaurants/bars were so relaxed about taking drinks out (including bottles of wine/cava) we didn't feel this was an issue. The shower was amazing, always lots of pressure and hot water, we never had any issues with that! We both commented how comfy the beds were, so much so we never missed our own beds at home! And like everyone keeps saying free safe, which is always a bonus! Food - I was a bit worried as my friend is a vegan so was concerned there wasn't going to be a lot of choice but she found lots of food to have and the Italian even made her a cheese-less pizza so felt like they really accommodated her dietary needs. The hotel is great at putting signs with the food about what the food contains but unfortunately on one occasion they missed the fact there were chorizo in the soup so my friend ended up eating a bit of meat, luckily for her, she wasn't too upset but I can imagine some people would be incredibly offended and upset so we did point it out to the hotel staff and they very quickly apologised and changed the sign. I personally loved all the food, especially the pizzas, my only slight complaint is that sometimes the food was overpowered with garlic, so dread to think how much we must have smelt but it's such a tiny negative on such wonderful mass catering! Beach towels are complimentary, you have a towel card to hand in at the shop and you can change the towels as often as you liked, however they were on the thin side, looking like they could do with replacing but they were fine for us, on our sun loungers but if this is something that would bother you, be best to take your own towel. The walk to the beach is steep but if you go via the steps from the private lodges side of the resort, you'll find it much easier. If you are able to go to the beach, I would definitely recommend as it's beautiful beach and the sea is so colourful, at times it made me forget I was still in Europe, felt more Caribbean! Weather - I know you can't control that but we had a few mornings of showers but it brightened up for the afternoon, so really enjoyed the weather to say back here in the UK it was pretty freezing! Entertainment team, waiters/waitresses, bar staff were all amazing! Really friendly and efficient! Overall had such a wonderful holiday, would definitely return to this hotel and also would recommend the brand Magic Life as you can tailor make your holiday while you are there, you can be as active as you like without the pressure of staff trying to make you join in like you sometimes can have with other brands. Thanks for a lovely holiday guys!More
It is what it is
There are a lot of reviews about this hotel many of which repeat the same things, so I am going to try and write about things I didn't read on here before we went! If you go to the fitness classes take your Lycra otherwise you will look out of place! There are a lot of young, fit people here. The fitness area with lovely views would have been better to have been built as a smaller restaurant as none of the hotel restaurants or bars really had a good view of the sea. Don't expect much in the way of quality entertainment. You can ask for nuts to snack on when drinking at the Plaza bar. You can take the coffee pot out of the restaurant after breakfast and drink it in peace and quiet at one of the tables dotted around the complex. The restaurant is quite disorientating due to its shape, size and table layout In the Italian for late lunch, the draughty beer is too full of gas so better. To stick to bottles of wine. Be prepared for many nudists walking up and down the beach (mainly over 50 years old)! No waiter service for drinks anywhere in hotel and shortage of pint glasses. Good value for money if you want a week in the sun. More
We felt welcomed at this hotel after a long journey and an hours coach transfer. Drinks were waiting for us on arrival, and we were told where we could eat. There was a bit of a wait to check in, but this wasn't a problem as the bar area was comfortable and we were able to access the bar on arrival for drinks while we waited. There are no wrist bands at this hotel. We were directed to where we could get food after check in and our cases were taken to our rooms for us. We had requested 2 rooms together and staff were accommodating in meeting our request. Rooms were in block 16. We got a partial view of the pool, and partial sea view. Rooms were big and comfortable. Fridge in rooms stocked with water on arrival, and two small can soft drinks. Although the beds were okay, we've slept in comfier beds in 4 star rated hotels. The mattress toppers kept sliding off the bed. We did have a few downpours while we were there in terms of the weather, but the sun came out very quickly, always a risk wherever you go. However, this left the steps, walkways and walking areas and steps to access rooms extremely wet and slippery, with puddles that took a while to dry out. The poolside is extremely slippery. Moving on to the pools. The main pool is massive. There are other smaller pools. None of the pools are heated, and are freezing cold. The sea is warmer. Snacks and drinks are only available at the main pool, and are quite limited to toasties, hot dogs and chips. Lots of activities are centred around the smaller pool at the back of the pool bar area. We didn't find this out until halfway through our break, and we weren't really directed to this area. There's a shop onsite which sells the usual basics, and a sporty type clothes shop. There are literally tons of activities to get involved with at this hotel. My adult son only took part in one of the activities, and as an English speaker was in the minority. He felt excluded as the staff member running the activity did not give all of instructions in English, and spent a lot of time chatting and laughing with German guests. This hotel seems to have a lot of German visitors. We have mixed feelings about the food at this hotel. The Italian restaurant opens up as a snack bar from 2pm until 5.30pm, and the pizza in there is fab, with a good selection. The meals in the main restaurant are mixed. If you arrived after 7pm there was a queue to get into the restaurant. The restaurant was crowded, and a lot of the people in there were rude and bad mannered, charging from one station to another, pushing in front of others, trying to get food on their plate as quickly as possible. The staff in the restaurant seemed to have the same rush about everything. They seemed extremely overworked, and would often snatch your plate from in front of you before you'd finished your last mouthful. There are supposed to be different theme nights, although we couldn't always make sense of things because whatever the theme was the food on offer seemed to be more or less the same. Italian night with not a pizza in sight. Mexican night with no chilli, and not a taco to be seen. One night almost everything on offer seemed to contain pork, and on another night chicken provencal was labelled, which was actually curried chicken. We visited the grill restaurant one evening, which was partly self service, with the same deserts as in the main restaurant, only a far more limited choice. There were no starters that we could eat, and the main course menu provided a choice of steak, salmon or lamb, which arrived as three lamb cutlets, sat on a bed of something orange in colour, which was bland and really tasteless. The steak was not properly cooked, and all veg was cold. I'd say don't bother with the grill restaurant. The main restaurant is better even if this does resemble a bun fight. My partner had severe sickness and diarrhea for two days after eating turkey. She was the only one of us who had eaten turkey and the only one who became ill. Drinks - when we arrived Prosecco was on offer, but this was changed at night to a different brand of something yellow and fizzy, which just didn't taste the same. Entertainment at night ranged from good to diabolical. We know that people have different tastes. There was a man with a keyboard who was pleasant to listen to, and a man and woman singer duo who were dreadful. The theatre shows looked good from outside. We couldn't get a seat in the theatre. The main thing that lets this place down is it's clientele. We're not fitness fanatics, and we're two female's who were with our adult children who both have some disabilities. We felt the other guests were extremely insular, and we received stares from others, which was sometimes uncomfortable. Guests seemed to remain within their own parties, and there just wasn't a friendly all inclusive atmosphere between the different nationalities there. To the contrary, we actually felt quite judged. Overall we had a nice break. We mainly just ended up doing our own thing rather than joining in with what was on offer, and probably could have spent less doing the same somewhere different. We'd probably return if the price was right, but only really for the climate that the Canaries offers, and not for anything that this hotel offers in particular. We were surprised, having read some of the amazing reviews about this place. More
Lovely hotel but "restaurant' lets it down
This hotel was really lovely. However, I will report the negatives first. The main restaurant is like a massive noisy open plan school canteen with nasty wood veneer tables and chairs, all lined up in rows. There was barely enough room to walk between them and the noise from the stations where plates were stacked was deafening and frankly this would absolutely prevent me from ever returning! Oh and don't bother taking any nice dressy clothes either, this is not that kind of hotel. The second negative is not directed at the hotel but at Thompson. They are recommending the most expensive car hire company with the worst cars. Ask the hotel for car hire names instead or do some research before you go! Now for the positives and there are many. Firstly, going back to the restaurants, the food was amazing, if anyone complains about this then there is something wrong with them! Also we did eat in the ala carte restaurants to get away from the canteen and they were brilliant. Also for lunch if you can wait till 2 o'clock you can eat in the lovely courtyard when the Italian does the second lunch sitting which is on a much smaller scale food wise but still plenty of variety and delicious! The rooms are large, spotlessly clean and the most comfortable beds I've ever slept on apart from my own. The grounds are beautiful. The pool is spotlessly clean, although water temperature is freezing, hardly anyone got in it while we were there, including me, very large and has plenty of sun beds and therefore no rush for beds. The staff were excellent, the drinks and cocktails were brilliant. The evening entertainment was very good especially the Friday night disco! So all in all, if you can put up with the canteen then it's great.More
