Rethymnon’s old town is one of the best preserved in Crete. Take a walk through the narrow streets, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by arched doorways and stone staircases. Don’t miss Fortezza, the largest ever Venetian castle. It was built in the 16th century to protect the town from pirate raids and the Turks. The fairy-lit old Venetian harbour is worth a visit, too.
