Barbati's a winner through and through – it's considered to have the best beach on Corfu's east coast. The glistening shores are only a 10-minute walk from the village centre, so you can pop down for a swim after your morning cappuccino. Once you're there, hire a parasol and sunlounger and laze it up for as long as you like.

Home to history

Hop on one of the regular buses to the island capital of Corfu Town to get your history fix. You'll find two Ottoman-era fortresses, over three dozen churches and French-inspired 19th-century architecture in the swanky Liston. At the end of the day, wind down with a summer spritz at a bistro along the old town's charming lanes.
