A bayside gem

Igalo’s perched on the edge on the Bay of Kotor – dubbed ‘Europe’s southernmost fjord’ – so the panoramas from the town are top of the tree. You’ll want to keep your camera close by – the water around these parts is so blue it’ll have you thinking you’ve hopped across to one of the Greek Islands. And sky-scraping Mount Orjen rolls out plenty of snappable views.

The bouncy neighbour

Just around the corner is Herceg Novi – AKA New Castle – which blends into Igalo as you wander along the promenade. It’s packed with pretty, yellow mimosa trees, which nudge up against ritzy boutiques and late-night bars. Pay a visit to the Turkish-built Kanli Kula fortress. It comes with a long war history and, today, houses an open-air theatre. The 300-year-old Savina Monastery’s a must-see, too – it’s draped in greenery, and sits high above the town overlooking the harbour.

Close by Kotor

Montenegro’s terracotta-topped megastar is just over an hour’s drive away – follow the coastal road that hugs the seafront. It’s got strong Italian vibes, thanks to 400 years spent ruled by the Venetian Republic. The architecture’s really impressive – particularly in the old town, which is one of the best-kept Medieval settlements in the Adriatic. Make the climb up to the Church of Our Lady of Remedy, and you’ll be treated to half-moon views of the bay.
