Ringed by mountains and the Adriatic Sea, holidays to Lopud Island are a world away from the hustle and bustle of mainland Croatia.

Car-free and carefree

A charming seafront promenade, endless views over teal-blue water and not a car in sight – life sure's a beach on Croatia's Lopud Island. This rocky isle's known as the loveliest of the Elaphite Islands off the Dalmatian Coast – just ask one of its 200 inhabitants.

Sandy

Sunj

Over the hills, on the island's south side, is Sunj Beach. The soft sands here make the perfect blanket for lying in the sunshine. If you want to take things up a gear, join in on a game of volleyball or tennis, or hop on a jet-ski.

Fruits of the sea

Lopud offers a real taste of the Mediterranean in its 'konobas' – traditional seafront restaurants. Try creamy seafood risotto made from fresh-caught ingredients, or local speciality 'Lopudian brodeto' – a fish stew served over polenta. A great time to dine is while the sun sinks slowly over the water.

Elaphite evenings

For a chilled-out evening of regional Plavac wine while you gaze across the harbour, try one of Lopud's local bars. Be prepared for a little live music too, as bar staff are known to get out their tamburicas and crack out some Croatian folk songs.
