Tonnes of islands
Contrary to popular opinion, Zanzibar’s not just one island, but a whole archipelago of more than 40 islands. You’ll find most of the action in Unguja, but island hopping’s a way of life in these parts, so getting out and about to explore them’s a doddle.
Colourful contrasts
From dove-white beaches to emerald-green forests and mangrove swamps, Zanzibar’s landscapes change colour from one spot to the next. With so much scenery to see, don’t forget to charge the camera up before you head out.
Snap selfies in Stone Town
This UNESCO World Heritage Site’s grabbed a cultural corner of the island’s capital, Zanzibar City. Big Catholic cathedrals, colonial-style houses and Hamamni Persian baths are all on the to-see list in Stone Town, which dates back to the 1st century.
Spice up your life
Back in the day, spice farming was the big money-maker in Zanzibar before tourists cottoned on to the place. Even now, there’s still a whopping number of different spices grown here – so much so, that the archipelago’s nicknamed ‘The Spice Islands’. You can even take a tour of the plantations to see how store cupboard spices like vanilla, nutmeg and black pepper are produced.
