Resting along the Arabian Sea, west India's town of Calangute still retains the fun-loving atmosphere from its former hippie days. Take your pick from the bars and clubs open until the early morning hours, or spend your time beachside and cool off in blissful blue waters.

The in-crowd

Locals and tourists throng to Calangute's busy market area. Baga Road's main shops do a roaring trade in everything from massages to mango ice-cream. The famous Tito's Lane leads off the main beach – a seemingly endless row of late-night clubs and drinking spots.

Stretch out

Thrill-seekers will be immediately attracted to Calangute Beach. With a pick 'n' mix of watersports to try, there's plenty to keep all ages busy. When you need an energy boost, head to the beachfront's mouthwatering street food stalls. And don't forget to revel on the sand – Calangute Beach is Goa's longest shoreline.

Venturing out

In direct contrast to Calangute's wild ways is next-door neighbour Candolim. This sedate spot's dotted with Portuguese churches, swishing sands and sleepy streets. A 30-minute walk from there is the 17th-century Fort Aguada, which wows visitors with panoramic ocean views and a quaint whitewashed lighthouse.
