Perched on the hillside, holidays to Lachania offer the simple pleasures of Greek island life – sun, sea and tasty traditional food.

The high life

Lachania's a tiny mountainside village in south-east Rhodes – a Greek island not far from Turkey. Home to a cluster of whitewashed houses with traditional blue-painted window frames and doors, it presents a truly postcard-worthy scene. It has a cobbled courtyard, a couple of tavernas and a church, plus incredible countryside views.

Life's a beach

A short drive will bring you to long, sandy Lachania Beach, complete with its own bustling row of tavernas. Further along, Plimiri Beach sits on an unspoiled bay that's also home to nesting turtles. Another 30-minute drive along the coast takes you to Prasonisi, which is a popular spot with surfers.

Dining under grapevines

For a taste of authentic Greece, mingle with the locals at a taverna in the main square. You can sit on a vine-covered veranda and taste some regional specialities, such as rustic rabbit stew, slow-cooked lamb shank and sizzling 'souvlaki' – the Greek version of a Middle Eastern kebab.

Rhodian ruins

No visit to Rhodes is complete without a stop at some of the ancient monuments that are scattered along the coast. A 30-minute drive north will take you to the town of Lindos, home to a centuries-old acropolis, plus temples, churches and an amphitheatre near the beach.
