There's no better way to experience Greek island life than on holidays to Corfu Town – a modern capital that packs a historical punch.

A too-cool capital

Looking out to the Ionian Sea towards mainland Greece from the east coast of Corfu, Corfu Town mixes modern cosmopolitan style and rich history into one culture-packed hotspot. It's easy to spend a few days – or weeks – perusing the upmarket shops, strolling the beach and checking out the local museums.

Hidden history

The capital city's a one-stop-shop for all things ancient and educational. Start with the Byzantine Museum, followed by a visit to St Spyridon's Church – named in honour of a shepherd-turned-saint from 4th-century Cyprus. The man of honour's permanent home is now an ornate silver casket.

A royal beach

Walk half an hour from the town centre and you'll get to the lush green shores of Mon Repos Beach. On a nearby hillside overlooking the bay is a former British royal villa – the birthplace of Prince Philip – which has since been converted into the Museum of Palaeopolis.

Hop on a boat

Don't let its teeny size fool you – there's a lot to explore on Vidos Island off Corfu's coast. Hop on a 10-minute ferry ride from Corfu Town and you'll have access to some quiet beaches and a low-key taverna near the jetty.
