If you're after pristine sands, a swanky marina and trendy clubs, holidays to Yasmine Hammamet won't disappoint. This Tunisian resort is so new it's practically fresh from the wrapping.

Modern Tunisia

Yasmine Hammamet is the new kid on the block along this stretch of Mediterranean coastline. It’s got all the trappings of an ultra-modern resort – theme park, casino, nightclubs, golf courses, you name it. But you still get that old-fashioned Tunisian vibe, with camels plodding along the beach, and bearded old men sipping mint tea in the shade.

Blue Flag beach

The centre of the action is the beach, a 4-kilometre blanket of golden sand with a coveted Blue Flag to its name. It’s got top family credentials, thanks to the shallow sea. And those looking for a bit of a buzz can sign up for jet-skiing or parasailing. Plus, the sand is studded with bars and restaurants – perfect for a refreshing afternoon mint tea or grilled sardines for lunch.

Modern medina

An avenue of life-sized elephant statues leads up to the medina. This cat’s cradle of alleyways and squares is packed with restaurants and bars, as well as market stalls selling everything from hand-woven carpets to shisha pipes. Carthage Land is also here – it’s a theme park and mini-zoo that’s popular with kids.

Further afield

Ten minutes away by car is Hammamet, with its 13th-century medina. It’s home to the oldest mosque in North Africa – a giant sand-coloured building you can’t miss – plus a chic selection of shops. If escaping the crowds is more your thing, head for the George Sebastian Villa. This 1920s’ retreat is set in tranquil gardens, and right by the beach.
