Holidays to Agios Fokas serve up a 7-kilometre beach and water that's warm and bubbly, thanks to a friendly local volcano. It's nice and quiet here, but the island capital Kos Town is right on hand when you want to take things up a notch.

A warm welcome

In resort terms, Agios Fokas is small fry. Set on the north coast of Kos, it’s a dot of a thing that keeps itself quiet with just a clutch of tavernas and bars. It does have the capital, Kos Town, waiting in the wings for more action, though. And it’s got a clever twist, too. The place is opposite an island with a sleepy volcano – which heats the sea water up nicely.

Hot springs on the beach

Agios Fokas delivers 7 kilometres of sand – half white and pebbly, half volcanic and dark – spliced with rock pools. You’ve got sunloungers to hire plus a few beachfront bars to keep you in food and ice-creams. As for the sea water, temperatures here hit 40 degrees thanks to the volcano on Nissyros Island opposite. And all along the stretch you’ll find natural swimming pools formed by the hot, bubbling springs.

Close to Kos Town and Bodrum

Handily, regular buses run to Kos Town, about 15 minutes away. Here you can explore the harbour-side souvenir shops and minaret-topped church. There are ruins to see, too – a Medieval castle for starters, followed by ancient temples. You’ve got seafront bars and clubs, if you’re making a night of it. Or you could try another country. Ferries from Kos Town take 15 minutes to get to Bodrum in Turkey.
