Holidays to Mahon bring swanky shopping sprees and open-air concerts – all wrapped up in a historic yet decidedly modern package.

Magnificent Mahon

It doesn't get much better than Mahon in Spain's Balearic Islands. The Menorcan capital's a cocktail of old and new must-dos, from impressive forts to a shopping scene sparkling with glitz and glamour. It's also got a prime eastern spot, putting the rest of this sunny isle right at your fingertips.

Hit the streets and hang out

Chilled-out or bustling and busy, Mahon does both. Have a wander around the city's historic independent markets, or take home some gourmet souvenirs from the traditional food shops. After sunset, turn up the volume at any of Mahon's nightlife hangouts, from bouncing clubs to easygoing jazz bars.

Churches and gin-tasting

The capital's the perfect base for an island-style culture fix. Santa Maria Church holds daily organ concerts, and no trip to Mahon would be complete without tasting some history at the 18th-century gin distillery. Plus, the grand cathedral and ancient architecture of Ciutadella is just over an hour's drive away.

Balearic beach bliss

For easy strolls, head to Cami de Cavalls, a multi-level path along the coast, 17 minutes' drive west of Mahon. Sand seekers can head east to the pristine sands of Cala Mesquida cove, or south to the Blue Flag award-winning beach of Punta Prima. Both are only 15 minutes away by car.
