Nerja holidays couldn't be more authentically Spanish – think tapas bars, sandy shores and some lively local nightlife.

Authentic España

Nerja's nestled on Spain's Costa del Sol, a little east of Malaga's high-rise hotels and golden sands. Laze away the day on beaches backed by mountains, then shimmy and shake until dawn to Balearic beats. For a spot of history, visit Balcon de Europa, a palm-lined castle terrace perched above the sea.

Dance the night away

Don't let daytime Plaza Tutti Frutti fool you into thinking this place only runs on quiet mode. There are 25 bars and clubs along its sides, waiting for the night revellers to make an appearance. Come midnight, the square comes alive with the sounds of dance and pop music.

Life's a beach

Nerja's rocky coastline has got 10 beaches, all with a sand and shingle mix. Playa Burriana's the most popular, though there's usually plenty of towel space here. Even tiny Torrecilla – an adorable 300 metres long – is fully set up for beach bums thanks to showers, lifeguards and a sprinkling of cafés.

Further afield

A 40-minute drive will bring you to Malaga, Picasso's buzzing birthplace. Check out the painter's masterpieces at Casa Natal, or head to the promenade for sandy shores and oceanfront restaurants. From Nerja, you can reach Granada's breathtaking Alhambra Palace in under two hours' drive – just book your entry well in advance.
