Pine-clad hillsides, a choice of beaches and authentic tavernas to unwind in – holidays to Parga are the real Greek deal.

Daytrip central

Parga's nestled in a corner of the Preveza region in north-west Greece, and it's well-placed for little daytrips. You can catch ferries to the islands of Corfu, Paxos or Antipaxos. Or, tick another country off your list by hopping across the border into Albania.

Town life

Parga Town gets busy every day with local fishermen emptying their catches at the harbour – watch them work for a peek into traditional Greek life. On land, explore the narrow, cobbled streets in search of jewellery or leather goods at bargain prices. Once the sun sets, it's time for a 'tsipouro' aperitif – that's un-aged Greek brandy – in one of the family-owned cafés.

Greek myths

Legends are around every corner in this part of the world. Some say the Acheron River, 30 minutes' drive from Parga, flows right down into the underworld. Meanwhile, the ancient sanctuary of Dodoni was once home to the oldest of the Greek oracles – and it's just over an hour's drive away.

Bag a beach

Parga Town's Krioneri Beach is opposite an island with a picturesque church, only a brief swim from the shore. If you prefer, take a five-minute taxi boat to lively Valtos Beach, or head to Lichnos' beach for watersports and family-friendly facilities.
