Al Aqah holidays play Cupid between natural and manmade. Think pinch yourself mountain scenery and a smattering of swish hotels.
This place doesn’t play by the UAE’s high-rise rules. Instead, it’s more about sea views and lazy days than skyscrapers and super-sized shopping malls. The whopping beach is ideal for sunbathing sorts, and it’s just a lounger’s length away from restaurants and the swimming pools of the sand-side hotels.
The Fujairah patch of the UAE’s a landscape photographer’s dream. The Hajar Mountain range dominates the viewfinder, with some of the region’s most historic stop-offs squirrelled away among them. There’s Al Bithnah Fort – a wafer-coloured castle that dates back to the 1800s – and one of the oldest places of worship in any of the Emirates – Al Badiyah Mosque. Nearby Fujairah City changes the record, though, and delivers slick shopping malls by the bucketload.
This rocky island off the coast of Al Aqah’s an absolute ringer for the famous cartoon canine. And it’s not just a novelty, either. Snorkelling trips are a huge hit with visitors in these parts, with a reef around the island that’s home to colourful fish and the occasional turtle or ray. If you’d rather keep your feet dry, you can paddle out for a nosey in a kayak instead.
