Holidays to Al Aqah are spent chilling out on the sand, snorkelling among marine life and sipping cocktails in laidback bars.
Easy-going Al Aqah’s a big hit with Emiratis who come here for a break from big city life. As one of the UAE’s newer holiday spots, it’s far less developed than the likes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Only a handful of hotels stand between the striking Hajar Mountains and the saffron-coloured sands of the long, ruler-straight beach.
There’s a beachfront diving centre where you can sign up for underwater tours of coral gardens and ancient shipwrecks. For a more casual encounter with sea life, wade out to Snoopy Island. This craggy mound – shaped like the cartoon dog – is just off the beach, and is a hangout for rays, turtles and multi-coloured fish.
Nearby Fujairah City
If you fancy exploring, hit the road for central Fujairah. There are loads of sights for history buffs along the way, including ancient castles, watchtowers and the 500-year-old Al Badiyah Mosque. The city itself is more modern. Among its glass-panelled skyscrapers, you’ll find a big shopping mall, with a cinema and a mini-theme park for kids.
