Horafakia holidays feel like you've stepped back in time to a more peaceful Crete, although excitement isn't too far away.
You can expect pine-covered hills and lush olive groves fromthe village of Horafakia, located in Greece's Chania area on the north-west coast of Crete. It also has a family bakery and a helping of traditional tavernas. Horafakia is all about peace and quiet but is only a 20-minute drive away from the more bustling town of Chania if you want to mix things up.
You'll see the ancient lighthouse first as you enter Chania – a symbol of how important this port once was to its early settlers. Inland from the huge Venetian harbour, there's a Medieval town to explore with higgledy-piggledy streets and craft workshops galore.
Three white sandy beaches are nestled nearby. Stavros is a five-minute drive away – you might recognise it from the film Zorba the Greek. Tersanas is in a natural harbour just 15 minutes' walk from the village, and Kalathas, a 20-minute stroll away, sits opposite a tiny island. Strong swimmers gather here, and it's a favourite haunt for first-time snorkellers and experts alike.
