Kalami holidays are so peaceful it feels like they've been soundproofed. This teeny town's in an out-of-the-way spot on Corfu's eastern edge.
Kalami has had its alarm clock set to snooze for quite some time. It’s a village that keeps itself to itself, which means lots of traditional touches. We’re talking terracotta-tiled villas, sun-bleached townhouses and tavernas which have plenty of space to spread out by the sand. A couple of barely built-on headlands stretch out either side of town, so the bay in the middle’s squirrelled away from the Strait of Corfu.
The beach in Kalami has the sort of good looks that would be at home on a postcard. Valley-crested hills chip in with background scenery, and peach and pomegranate-coloured properties punch holes in the blanket of trees. The sand-and-pebble stretch at the bottom is just as snoozy as the rest of the village, so a low-key sunbathing sesh is the norm. For an even more secluded patch, take a 10-minute walk around the headland to Kouloura Harbour, where cypress trees and speedboats buddy up with a pocket of sand.
Despite being out in the sticks, Kalami is still within daytripping distance of the island’s namesake capital, Corfu Town. The drive's just shy of an hour and, because it follows the coastline, you’ll have tip-top vistas along the way. When you arrive, things couldn’t more different to your dialled-down digs – Corfu Town’s crammed with shopping streets and international eateries, and its whopping fortress is a sightseeing must.
Kalami has a pretty sand-and-shingle beach lapped by deep blue waters and backed by lush green hills of olive, cypress, orange and lemon trees. Day-trippers often arrive by boat at the wooden jetty, and it can be busy in the summer. The waters are lovely and clear, making it perfect for snorkellers and swimmers, as well as those who enjoy lazing on a lilo. There are rocks beneath the water in some places.
