Holidays to Lake Balaton are made for wining and dining, soaking up culture and getting stuck into activities.

Hungary’s sea

You might have spotted the splash of blue in the western corner of Hungary on the map... That's Lake Balaton, AKA the 'Hungarian Sea'. This big body of water measures 77 kilometres from end to end, making it central Europe’s largest lake. It has heaps of holiday highlights to match, too. Castles and palaces dot the shoreline, while lakeside towns are buzzing with bars, restaurants and busker-lined promenades. And then there’s the foodie scene which is bound to have you coming back for seconds.

Lakeside life

On the lake itself, there's loads of watersports options for outdoorsy types. You can explore the water by SUP, pedalo or kayak. The local ferries also make it easy to hop between different spots, like from Balatonfüred with its baroque mansions to Siófok, where lavender fields turn the hillsides purple each summer – it's definitely one for your Insta. But if your vibe is more about chilling lakeside and taking in the scenery from a lounger, there’s also a mix of sandy spots and grassy lidos. For a bit of compromise, loads come loaded with extras like slides and playparks for the kids, too – so, everyone's happy.

Fresh food

This is prime grape-growing country and it's all about the white wines here. They've got sweet and crisp kinds with a citrusy kick that are perfect in a cool spritz cocktail, but the warm weather means local farmers can grow all kinds of things. Book a table at the farmhouse-style restaurants to fill your belly with colourful salads and filling stews – it's the simple stuff but at its best. And when you’re out and about, you have to try Hungary’s fave street food, Lángos. Nowhere does this tasty combo of fried bread, sour cream and cheese better than here.
