Holidays to Pelekas Beach are really sand-centric. Here, everything revolves around the long beach and its collection of snug tavernas.
Life’s a beach
Set on Corfu’s west coast, Pelekas Beach subscribes to the less-is-more mantra. It’s big on relaxation, so you won’t find much more than a couple of hotels and eateries spaced out along the cream-coloured belt of sand. That said, you’ve got a two-for-one deal here – charming Pelekas village is just five minutes’ drive inland.
The beach here is a real sight for sore eyes. It’s a silky sands, see-through waters and green cliff combo. In between sunbathing sessions, you can load up on seafood at one of the traditional tavernas. Other than that, though, it’s all about zoning out on this sleepy stretch. As well as the main beach, there’s another within earshot, and the rest are just 15 minutes’ drive away.
Away from the sands, the hilltop village of Pelekas is basically a pin-up for traditional Greece. It’s home to the usual tavernas, shops and a pretty square, where you can watch the village’s men have their afternoon catch-ups. Locals reckon it’s the best place on the island to watch the sun go down. And Kaiser’s Throne is the in-demand sunset-snapping spot – the views from the top are well worth the climb.
Daytrips to Corfu Town
If you’re after city sights, you can easily head into Corfu Town for the afternoon. A half-an-hour’s drive will land you in the island’s cultured capital. The pretty-as-a-picture old town is all terracotta rooftops and wrought-iron balconies. There are two forts, museums and fancy boutiques to check out, too.
