View All DealsA thoroughly Greek island getaway, holidays to Samos Town offer beaches, bustling streets and ancient treasures by the boatload.
Samos Town has all the perks of being one of Samos island's biggest destinations. The old town's cobbled streets are lined with rows of artisan shops, and there's a lively market and a maze of tavernas. For a change of pace, stretch out on the nearby beach, or head for the hills to discover ancient ruins.
Located just a five-minute walk from Samos Town's harbour is the Blue Flag beach at Gagou. It's a 200-metre-long sheltered stretch of sand and shingle that's lapped by sparkling waters. If that doesn't float your rubber ring, head to the quieter shores of Psili Ammos, about 25 minutes' drive away.
Embark on a classy kind of bar-crawl with a tour of Samos Town's 'ouzeris' – elegant little bars specialising in the anise-flavoured local tipple. Visitors with a taste for sweet wines will appreciate the over-ripe Muscat, which was immortalised in poetry by Lord Byron.
The Dodecanese Islands have been inhabited for millennia. Half an hour’s drive away, you can stroll through the ancient Sanctuary of Heraion. This was once home to the largest temple in Ancient Greece, dedicated to the goddess Hera. The remaining ruins include a single stone pillar that stands 10 metres tall.
