Playa Tamarindo
Holidays to San Jose del Cabo are like a pick ‘n mix bag that's stuffed to the brim with old-school Spanish architecture, art-fuelled rambles and celeb-approved beaches.
San Jose del Cabo tiptoes between stylish beach resort and charming old town territory. Colonial, Spanish-inspired architecture crops up in the centre, near Plaza Mijares, with open-air cafés, the pretty Mission San Jose del Cabo church, and market stalls dotted around. Turn your attention to the marina, and you’ll see a more modern get-up. The main beach, Playa Hotelera, gets its moniker from the fairy light-style string of hotels that dangle behind the sand.
Los Cabos, or Cabo, has its fair share of wallet-busting resorts, lots of which are planted in the ‘Tourist Corridor’ – a strip of coastline that unravels westwards from San Jose del Cabo. In the city itself, the art scene’s its signature dish. Maze-like lanes are polka-dotted with barely-there art galleries, which showcase the colourful daubings and drawings of the locals.
Strip away the make-up, and you’ll see it’s not all celebs and sunbathing sessions around here. The peaky Sierra de la Laguna mountains poke into the distant skyline, and the land west of San Jose del Cabos is peppered with pro-designed golf courses with views of the Pacific Ocean. Scamper across to the east coast, and you’ll reach Cabo Pulmo National Park. The scenery here’s top-notch, so you can give your Insta filters the day off.
In double-act terms, Cabo San Lucas is like the boisterous Captain Kirk to San Jose del Cabo’s quietly considered Mr Spock. This swashbuckling town’s more at home with decadence, drinks deals and designer labels. Just look at the bar scene – one of the most popular party hotspots is owned by former Van Halen front man Sammy Hagar. Elsewhere, big-money yachts bob in the marina, and the iconic arched rock of Land’s End is in the viewfinder from the beaches.
