Villa holidays in Portugal set the benchmark for easy breezy getaways.

This part of Europe wrote the book on villa escapes, with a dot-to-dot of pretty properties peppering the green-tinted countryside.

Most of them come with private or shared pools, so even if you’re not right beside the beach you’ll be able to have a soak whenever the mood strikes. Design-wise, there’s everything from stylish and swanky to rustic and traditional on offer, and villa sizes range from diddy to massive, so there’s something for every group size.

When it comes to location, the Algarve has all sorts up its sleeve. Albufeira is leader of the pack – this town’s one of the buzziest in the region’s repertoire, with pulse-pounding nightlife, a culture-crammed old quarter and a big beach to boot.

If natural scenery’s more your cup of tea, Monchique has a namesake mountain beside it that you can trek up. Carvoeiro needs bigging up for its beach game, and there are golf courses by the bucketload around the town of Vilamoura. And even though a crop of our collection our in sleepy countryside spots, included car hire means you’re never more than a short drive from the region’s best bits.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You’ve got loads of choice when it comes to villa locations in Portugal. There’s no one place that stands out from the crowd, as the Algarve has so much variety. Carvoeiro comes up trumps in the beach stakes, Albufeira is superb for shopping, and Monchique comes with mega mountain views.

If playing a few holes is your bag, make a beeline for Vilamoura. There are tonnes of golf courses in the Algarve, but lots of golf fans flock here as it’s practically neighbours with the fairways.

You’ll do well to find a villa that’s not near a beach in the Algarve – this part of Portugal hugs the coastline pretty tightly, so you can be anything from a short stroll to a quick drive away from the sands.
