It’s official – staying in is the new going out. On the hunt for some travel inspo while sofa sunbathing? You’ll find loads of ideas for your post-lockdown getaway on our blog.
When you’re after a bit of travel inspo, one of the best things you can do – other than drooling over beautiful pictures on Instagram – is to turn to the words of some of the world’s greatest writers. The authors and quotes we’ve picked make us feel all inspired to get out and see the world…
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover – Mark Twain
This isn’t the only travel quote that Mark Twain is known for, but it might be his most famous. It’s one of our favourites because it makes you feel brave, and inspires you to go the places you’ve always wanted to. So where’s first on your list? Somewhere far flung, like Costa Rica?
To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries – Aldous Huxley
We think Huxley is on to something here – seeing somewhere for yourself is much better than hearing about it from someone else. Until you’ve been to a place and experienced it first-hand, you’ll never know if what everyone says is true. Colour the world with your own memories and experiences, and find out for yourself whether tacos are better on the beach in Mexico than at home in front of the TV… we’re going to assume they are.
To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the most pleasant sensations in the world. You are surrounded by adventure – Freya Stark
We think seeing the world solo is super cool. But no matter who you’re travelling with, being in a place that’s completely different from what you’re used to, like Sri Lanka, is always exciting. Everything is brand new, and there’s so much you haven’t seen, heard, or smelled before. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Not all those who wander are lost – JRR Tolkien
Taken from a longer poem in his Lord of the Rings series titled ‘All That Is Gold Does Not Glitter’, this quote makes it onto travel lists everywhere. And we love it, because it shows how important travel is in shaping who we are. For many holidaymakers, travel is a chance to see other cultures, meet new people, and try new things while still living their everyday life. It’s just as exciting going to somewhere like Croatia for a week as it is to travel for months at a time….
I think you travel to search and you come back home to find yourself there – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
And finally, is there anything sweeter than coming home to your own bed after a long trip, with memories that’ll last a lifetime? Your eyes are opened and you’ll probably look at the world differently. Travel makes you more open-minded, creative, and mostly, makes you want to see more. Go out there and explore the world – you won’t come back the same.
