Cocktails are an essential part of any holiday. What could be better than relaxing on the beach with a Mojito or Pina Colada in hand? In honour of this poolside staple, we’re bringing you a cocktail recipe every month. This month, it’s a frozen sangria…
Everyone knows that sangria is a Spanish staple, but it also happens to be a popular Portuguese punch as well. There are loads of varieties of the well-known drink using different types of wine – red, white and rose included – and various fruit combinations. So, if you’ve brought back some of the local tipple, or got half a bottle of vino left to use up, this is the perfect recipe.
Our favourite way to drink sangria is in frozen form, because it’s just a touch more refreshing and, of course, it looks great on Instagram, too. Check out our video guide below and start making your own delicious cocktails.
Makes one cocktail
1/2 cup frozen raspberries or fruit
1/2 ounce Cointreau
1/2 cup red wine
orange slice for garnish
The step-by-step method
Put the frozen fruit, Cointreau, ice cubes, and red wine into a blender.
Blend the ingredients together and pour into a tumbler.
Add an orange slice to garnish.
Top tip – always blend ice cubes with frozen fruit rather than fresh fruit for instant slushiness. If you only have fresh fruit, blend the mixture and freeze for a few hours to bring out the slush.
Did you know?
The name sangria actually comes from the Portuguese word ‘sangre’ which means blood – not a staple ingredient, of course.
Where to find the best sangrias on holiday
If you’re Costa del Sol bound, check out Bar Paco Y Tere and Jacko’s in Fuengirola or Boca Boca in Salou. The Beach Club at Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza in Playa d’en Bossa serves up a great sangria, as does Bar La Carbonera in the Ibiza Town. And, if you’re heading to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, don’t miss the Wild Wild West BBQ where you can enjoy an all you can eat barbeque with complementary sangria.
